By the third and fourth cycles (5-7 hours into sleep), REM periods can last 30-45 minutes. The final REM period of the night, just before natural waking, may extend to 60 minutes in some individuals.

The brain fills in the gaps during recall, making a 20-minute dream feel like a longer journey.
- Emotional intensity: Research shows that emotionally intense experiences feel longer in retrospect. Nightmares, in particular, are often reported as feeling much longer than neutral dreams, likely because the sustained emotional arousal creates stronger and more detailed memory encoding.
