In these situations, the standard single-spot approach is not sufficient. You need a different strategy, one that accounts for the volume of liquid, the spread across the mattress surface, and the depth of penetration. This guide addresses large-area urine accidents specifically.
Immediate Response: Maximum Blotting First
With a small spot, you blot a few times, get most of the liquid, and move on to the enzyme cleaner. With a large accident, the blotting phase is where you invest significant time and effort, because every millilitre of liquid you remove by blotting is liquid that the enzyme cleaner does not have to break down later.
Efficient Blotting for Large Areas
- Use as many dry cloths or towels as you need. Old bath towels work well. You need high-absorbency materials, not paper towels, which are not absorbent enough for large volumes.
- Apply full body weight pressure. Lay a folded towel over the wettest section and press down with both hands, or stand on the towel carefully. The goal is to compress the mattress and force liquid up into the towel rather than down.
- Work from the edges inward. With a large stain, starting from the centre pushes liquid further into the mattress and outward. Start from the perimeter and work toward the middle.
