What has happened chemically during those hours matters. Urine is initially a solution: water, urea, uric acid, creatinine, ammonia precursors, and salts are all dissolved and mobile. As the water evaporates, these compounds become increasingly concentrated. Uric acid, which is poorly soluble in water even when fresh, begins to crystallise as the concentration rises. By 6-8 hours, significant crystallisation has occurred. By 24 hours, most of the uric acid has formed crystals that bond to foam and fabric fibres.
