It happens. A nosebleed at 3 AM, a scraped knee, a period that arrives early. Blood on your sheets is one of those universal household problems that everyone deals with and nobody talks about. The good news: blood stains are almost always removable if you act correctly. The bad news: the instinct to use hot water, which most people try first, is the single worst thing you can do.
Why Cold Water, Always Cold Water
Blood is a protein-based stain. Heat causes proteins to coagulate and bond to fabric fibres, the same way cooking an egg solidifies the whites. Hot water does to blood in sheets exactly what a frying pan does to egg whites: it sets the stain permanently. Once heat-set, a blood stain is nearly impossible to fully remove.
This is the most important thing in this entire article. If you remember nothing else: cold water only. Cold water rinse, cold water soak, cold water wash. Every step. If someone in your household throws blood-stained sheets into a hot wash cycle, the stain is likely permanent.
Fresh Blood Stains (Still Wet)
Step 1: Rinse under cold running water. Hold the stained area under the tap with cold water flowing through the back of the fabric. This pushes the blood out rather than deeper in. Most fresh blood washes out in 30-60 seconds of cold rinsing.
Step 2: Blot, do not rub. Use a cold, damp white cloth and dab the remaining stain. Rubbing spreads the blood and pushes it further into the weave. Dabbing lifts it out.
Step 3: Soak in cold water. Fill a basin or tub with cold water and submerge the stained section for 30 minutes. Change the water if it becomes visibly pink.
Step 4: Apply hydrogen peroxide. Pour a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide (the brown bottle from any pharmacy) directly on any remaining stain. It will fizz on contact with the blood. Let it work for 5 minutes, then rub the fabric gently together and rinse cold.
Step 5: Machine wash cold. Run a regular wash cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Check the stain before drying. If any trace remains, repeat the peroxide treatment. Do not put stained sheets in the dryer until the stain is completely gone.

Test it on an inconspicuous area first, especially on coloured sheets, as peroxide can lighten some dyes. On white and light-coloured cotton or bamboo sheets, it is safe and remarkably effective. For dark sheets, enzyme-based stain removers (sold at most grocery stores) are a safer alternative that will not affect colour.
Dried Blood Stains (Already Set)
Dried blood is harder but not impossible. The proteins have partially bonded to the fabric, but cold water and peroxide can still break that bond.
Soak the stained area in a basin with cold water and half a cup of hydrogen peroxide for up to 24 hours. Check every few hours. For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and cold water, apply to the stain, let it sit for 30 minutes, then continue soaking. After soaking, machine wash cold.
Enzyme-based laundry detergents or pre-treatments work well on dried blood because the enzymes break down the protein structure. Look for detergents that specifically list "protease" in their ingredients. Apply directly to the stain, let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then wash cold.
Salt dissolved in cold water is another traditional approach. It is less effective than peroxide but gentler on delicate fabrics like silk pillowcases or linen sheets.
