Quick Answer: Do not fold a hybrid or innerspring mattress as it will permanently damage the coil system. All-foam mattresses can be bent briefly but should never be folded sharply or left folded for more than an hour. For storage, keep the mattress flat, in a breathable mattress bag, in a climate-controlled space above freezing. Never store a mattress upright long-term or with weight stacked on it.

Can You Fold a Mattress?
The answer depends almost entirely on what type of mattress you have.
Hybrid and Innerspring Mattresses: Do Not Fold
If your mattress has coil springs (hybrid or traditional innerspring), folding it is almost certain to cause permanent damage. The steel coil structure is designed to support weight from above in a horizontal orientation. Folding the mattress bends the coils in a direction they were never designed to flex, which can kink, break, or misalign them. Once the coil system is damaged, the mattress cannot be repaired. Folding a coiled mattress, even briefly, can void the warranty.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "We see it occasionally. Someone moves, folds their mattress to get it around a tight staircase, and a few months later they are in wondering why there is a lump in the middle. The coils are bent. There is nothing to do but replace it. The only way to move a coiled mattress around a tight corner is to tilt it on its side and angle it carefully, never to fold it."
All-Foam and Memory Foam Mattresses: Can Bend Briefly, Not Fold Hard
Foam mattresses have more flexibility than coiled ones and can tolerate a gentle bend for a short time. However, there are still limits:
- A gentle curve or arc (not a sharp fold) for under one hour is generally safe for most foam mattresses.
- A sharp fold at 90 degrees or more can crack the foam internally, creating permanent creases or structural splits that affect the comfort layer.
- Leaving foam folded for several hours will cause it to set in the folded shape, particularly in cooler temperatures when foam is less pliable.
- High-density foams (4+ lb/ft³) are more resistant to folding damage than low-density foam.
Some bed-in-a-box brands compress and roll their mattresses for shipping. This is different from folding: it is a controlled compression that the manufacturer has engineered and tested. Replicating that roll at home without the proper equipment is not advisable.
Latex Mattresses: Even Less Flexible
Natural latex is firm and relatively brittle when cold. It can crack or tear if folded. Latex mattresses should be transported flat or with only a gentle curve, never folded.
| Mattress Type | Can You Fold? | Safe Transport Method |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid (foam + coils) | No. Will damage coils permanently. | Flat or on edge (upright). Not folded. |
| Traditional innerspring | No. Will damage coils permanently. | Flat or on edge. Not folded. |
| All-foam / memory foam | Gentle bend only. Under 1 hour. | Flat preferred. Gentle arc acceptable briefly. |
| Natural latex | No. Latex can crack when cold. | Flat. Do not fold or bend sharply. |
How to Move a Mattress Without Damage
Step 1: Get a Mattress Bag
A plastic mattress bag (available at moving supply stores for $10 to $20) protects the mattress from dirt, moisture, and tears during transport. It is one of the most cost-effective steps you can take. Seal the bag with tape after placing the mattress inside.
Step 2: Assess the Route
Before moving day, walk the route from the bedroom to the vehicle. Measure doorways, staircase widths, and hallway turns. Most mattresses need to be tilted on their side to navigate doorways and stairs. A queen mattress is typically 152 cm wide and 203 cm long. Standard doorways are 81 cm wide. Tilting the mattress on edge (standing it upright at 90 degrees from horizontal) reduces the effective width to the mattress thickness, typically 25 to 35 cm for most modern mattresses.
Step 3: Two People Minimum
A queen mattress weighs 45 to 70 kg depending on construction. A king can reach 90 kg. Moving a mattress alone risks injury and mattress damage. Two people, one at each end, is the minimum. Three people for stairs with a sharp landing is worth the extra help.
Step 4: Transport Flat When Possible
Transport the mattress flat (horizontal) whenever possible. This means a truck or van with a flat floor long enough to accommodate the mattress length. If the vehicle is too short, the mattress can rest diagonally or on its side temporarily, but avoid leaving it upright longer than necessary.
Step 5: Secure the Mattress in the Vehicle
Use straps to secure the mattress so it cannot shift during transport. A mattress that slides during a turn can fold against the vehicle wall, which puts pressure on the structure. Do not place heavy boxes or furniture on top of the bagged mattress during transit.

Navigating Tight Staircases
The combination move for narrow staircases: stand the mattress on edge (like a large slab), angle the bottom forward, and pivot as you ascend. One person at the top guides from above, one person below supports from underneath. A stair runner or moving blanket under the mattress edge protects your floors. For a 90-degree turn at a landing, think of it as a two-stage pivot: make the first turn, then the second.
How to Store a Mattress Long-Term
Short-term storage (a few days or weeks) is forgiving. Long-term storage (months or longer) requires more care to avoid permanent damage.
Step 1: Clean and Dry Completely
Any moisture in or on the mattress when it goes into storage will cause mould during storage. Clean any soiled areas, allow the mattress to air completely (in sunlight if possible), and confirm it is thoroughly dry before sealing it for storage. Even slightly damp foam will develop mould in a sealed environment.
Step 2: Wrap in a Breathable Cover
Use a mattress bag designed for storage, available at moving supply stores. Avoid standard plastic sheeting, which traps moisture and creates condensation inside the bag. Storage-specific bags often have venting or are made from breathable materials. Add two or three silica gel packets inside the bag to absorb any residual moisture.
Step 3: Store Flat, Not Upright
This is the most important storage rule. Storing a mattress on its side for months causes the internal materials (foam, coils, padding) to shift downward and compress unevenly. The result is permanent deformation. The mattress must be stored horizontally, flat on a supportive surface.
If floor space is limited, a wooden pallet works well. It keeps the mattress off the cold concrete floor (which promotes condensation) and allows some airflow underneath.
Step 4: Use Climate-Controlled Storage
In Ontario, a non-climate-controlled storage unit can see temperatures from -20°C in winter to +40°C in summer. These extremes affect foam and fabric. Cold makes foam rigid and brittle. Excessive heat softens adhesives used in mattress construction. A climate-controlled unit (typically 15-22°C year-round) is worth the additional cost for storage longer than three months.
Step 5: Keep Nothing on Top
Do not stack boxes, furniture, or other items on top of a stored mattress. Even moderate weight over months will create permanent impressions in the comfort layers. Reserve the full footprint above the mattress as clear space.
Step 6: Check Every Few Months
Open the storage bag every two to three months to allow fresh air exchange and to check for any moisture accumulation, mould spots, or pest activity. Reclose and reseal after checking.

How Long Can a Mattress Safely Be Stored?
A quality mattress stored correctly (flat, climate-controlled, dry, protected) can maintain its structural integrity for two to three years in storage. Beyond that, foam materials begin to degrade and the comfort layers may not recover fully to their original performance. Coil systems are more durable and can tolerate longer storage if moisture is controlled. For most Canadians, storing a mattress during a renovation or a short-term relocation is reasonable. Storing a mattress for years while planning to use it again later is a riskier proposition.
Storage Mistakes That Ruin Mattresses
- Storing upright for months. The most common mistake. Gravity shifts internal materials downward and creates permanent deformation.
- Using non-breathable plastic sheeting. Traps moisture and promotes mould growth.
- Placing directly on concrete. Concrete draws moisture from the air, which condenses on the cold surface and migrates into the mattress.
- Storing in an attic or unheated garage. Ontario temperature extremes damage foam materials and adhesives over time.
- Stacking items on top. Creates permanent impressions in the comfort layers.
- Not cleaning before storage. Any organic material (sweat, spills) becomes a mould and pest attractant over months.
- Folding to make it fit. Damages coils in hybrid mattresses permanently and can crack latex or dense foam.

Can a foam mattress be folded for storage and how should a fold-away cot mattress be stored?
Standard foam mattresses (particularly those thicker than 4 inches in high-density foam) should not be permanently folded since compression can damage the foam cell structure. A fold-away cot mattress designed for guest cots or folding frames is typically made from a lighter, more flexible foam (2 to 3 inches) that can fold safely for short-term storage. When storing a fold-away cot mattress, wrap it in a breathable cotton bag or mattress bag - not plastic, which traps moisture. Store flat if space allows, or folded in a cool, dry location. If folded for extended periods, allow the mattress to fully decompress before use.
