Quick Answer: To remove urine stains and smell from a mattress: blot fresh urine immediately, apply an enzyme cleaner or vinegar solution, cover with baking soda for 8 to 10 hours, then vacuum. Enzyme cleaners work best because they break down the uric acid crystals responsible for both the stain and the persistent odour. A waterproof mattress protector prevents future stains entirely.

Removing Fresh Urine From a Mattress
Speed matters. The faster you act, the less the urine penetrates into the mattress foam or coil layers. A stain addressed within 10 minutes is far easier to clean than one left for an hour.
How to Remove Fresh Urine From a Mattress
Step 1: Strip the Bed and Blot Immediately
Remove all bedding. Using clean white towels or paper towels, press firmly on the wet area to absorb as much urine as possible. Do not rub -- rubbing spreads the stain and pushes moisture deeper. Work from the outer edge of the wet area inward. Keep blotting with fresh sections of towel until you have removed as much liquid as possible.
Step 2: Apply Enzyme Cleaner (Preferred) or Vinegar Solution
Enzyme-based cleaners are the most effective option. Spray generously over the entire affected area and a few centimetres beyond it. Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Alternatively, mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water in a spray bottle, spray the area, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Blot again with clean towels.
Step 3: Apply Baking Soda
Once the area is as dry as you can get it, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda -- 3 to 5 millimetres thick -- over the entire affected area. The baking soda absorbs residual moisture and neutralises the alkaline compounds in urine that cause the smell. Leave it for a minimum of 8 hours. Overnight is better.
Step 4: Vacuum the Baking Soda
Use an upholstery attachment on your vacuum to remove all the baking soda. Do not use a brush to sweep it -- this embeds residue in the fabric. After vacuuming, check whether the odour has been fully neutralised. If not, repeat the enzyme cleaner or baking soda step.
Step 5: Allow Full Drying
The mattress must be completely dry before you replace bedding. Set up a fan pointing at the treated area, or prop the mattress against a wall in a well-ventilated space. In Brantford's summer months, placing the mattress near an open window for a few hours works well. Do not skip this step -- moisture trapped inside the mattress creates conditions for mould growth.

Removing Dried Urine Stains
Dried urine is harder to remove because the uric acid has crystallised into the mattress fibres and foam. You need a product that breaks down those crystals, not just one that covers the smell.
For Dried Urine: Enzyme Cleaner Is Essential
Enzyme cleaners contain protease, lipase, and other enzymes that chemically break down the uric acid crystals responsible for the yellow stain and the ammonia-like smell. Hydrogen peroxide solutions are an alternative: mix 250 ml hydrogen peroxide (3%), 3 tablespoons baking soda, and a few drops of dish soap. Apply to the stain, allow to bubble and sit for 30 minutes, then blot and follow with the baking soda treatment above. Do not use hot water on any urine stain -- heat sets the stain permanently.
Important: Test any cleaning solution on a hidden area of the mattress first to check for discolouration.
For old or heavily set stains, the enzyme cleaner approach works best when the area is kept moist during the dwell time. After applying the enzyme cleaner, cover with plastic wrap and leave for 30 to 60 minutes before blotting. This gives the enzymes time to do their work.
Removing Urine Smell From a Mattress
The smell is the hardest part. Urine produces ammonia and mercaptans as it breaks down, and these compounds bind to the mattress material. Standard cleaning that removes the visual stain often does not fully neutralise the smell, especially if the urine penetrated more than a centimetre into the foam.
| Odour Remover | How It Works | Best For | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enzyme cleaner | Breaks down uric acid and odour compounds biologically | All urine stains, especially dried | Takes time; must be kept moist |
| Baking soda | Alkaline base neutralises acidic odour compounds; absorbs moisture | After initial treatment; mild odours | Does not break down uric acid crystals |
| White vinegar | Acidity neutralises alkaline odour compounds | Fresh stains; odour control | Vinegar smell dissipates; does not cure dried crystals |
| Hydrogen peroxide solution | Oxidises stain and odour compounds | Yellow stains and set odours | Can lighten some dark fabrics; test first |
| Activated charcoal | Adsorbs odour molecules | Ongoing odour suppression | Does not clean; placed near mattress, not on it |
Best Products for Mattress Urine Removal
You do not need expensive products. The most effective solutions are typically simple:
Recommended Products and Ingredients
- Enzyme-based cleaner: Nature's Miracle, Rocco & Roxie, or similar pet enzyme cleaners (they are formulated for exactly this type of organic stain). Available at Canadian Tire, PetSmart, and most grocery stores.
- White vinegar: Standard grocery store white vinegar in a 50/50 dilution with cold water.
- Baking soda: Plain baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Purchase in bulk for generous application.
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%): Pharmacy-grade (brown bottle). Mix with baking soda and dish soap as described above.
- Cold water: Always use cold water for rinsing and diluting. Hot water sets stains.
- Spray bottle: For applying solutions evenly over the affected area.
- Clean white towels or microfibre cloths: For blotting without transferring colour to the mattress.
How to Prevent Future Stains
The single most effective thing you can do is use a waterproof mattress protector. A good mattress protector creates a barrier between the mattress and any liquid, whether from bedwetting, night sweats, spills, or illness. The protector is machine washable; the mattress is not.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "In 37 years, the most common reason people come in needing a new mattress is damage from liquid -- either a urine stain that never fully came out and never stopped smelling, or moisture over time that created a mould problem underneath. A ten-dollar protector would have prevented all of it. It is genuinely the best value purchase we sell."
For families with young children who are toilet training, or for incontinence situations, a waterproof protector on every bed in the house is simply a good baseline. When choosing a protector, look for one that is breathable (so it does not trap heat) as well as waterproof. Many lower-cost protectors use a rigid plastic backing that makes noise and becomes uncomfortably warm. A quality terry-backed or tencel protector is noticeably more comfortable.
When the Stain Cannot Be Removed
Sometimes a stain is old enough, or deep enough, that no home cleaning method fully resolves it. The smell returns every time the mattress warms up with body heat. If you have tried multiple cleaning approaches and the urine smell persists, or if the mattress is visually stained through to the core, it may be time to assess replacement. A mattress that has been heavily saturated with urine can also develop internal moisture conditions that affect the structural integrity of the foam. If you are unsure whether cleaning is still viable, come in and talk to us at the store -- we can help you weigh the options honestly.

Does baking soda remove urine smell from a mattress?
Yes, baking soda is effective at absorbing and neutralising urine odour. After treating the stain with an enzyme cleaner or vinegar solution and blotting dry, cover the area generously with baking soda and leave it for 8 to 10 hours before vacuuming. For strong odours, a second application may be needed.
Does white vinegar remove urine smell from a mattress?
White vinegar helps neutralise urine odour because its acidity breaks down some of the alkaline compounds in urine. Apply a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and cold water, let sit for 10 minutes, blot thoroughly, then follow with baking soda to absorb remaining moisture and odour. It is more effective on fresh stains than dried ones.
How do you remove dried urine stains from a mattress?
Dried urine stains require an enzyme-based cleaner, which breaks down the uric acid crystals responsible for both the stain and the persistent smell. Apply the enzyme cleaner generously, cover with plastic wrap to keep it moist for 30 to 60 minutes, then blot, apply baking soda, and vacuum after 8 hours.
Can urine damage a mattress permanently?
If left untreated, urine can saturate deep into the mattress foam and spring layers, where it is much harder to clean. Repeated exposure can degrade foam materials over time and create persistent mould conditions. A waterproof mattress protector prevents this entirely.
What is the best urine stain remover for a mattress?
Enzyme-based cleaners are the most effective because they break down the uric acid crystals that cause both the stain and the smell. Brands like Nature's Miracle and OxiClean are widely available in Canada. White vinegar plus baking soda is an effective household alternative for mild or fresh stains.
