A side rail is the long board or steel channel that runs down each side of a bed, from the headboard post to the footboard post. On a standard king, which the Better Sleep Council lists at 76 by 80 inches, the two side rails carry the slats or box spring, and a centre rail carries the middle. Two different products share the name "bed rail." Frame rails are structural: they hold the mattress up. Safety bed rails, also called guard rails or portable bed rails for children and seniors, clip on or slide under the mattress to stop someone rolling out. The second kind carries entrapment warnings from Health Canada, so it gets its own section below.

What Are King Mattress Rails?
King mattress rails are the long horizontal members that form the sides of a king bed frame. A traditional king has two side rails, a head rail and a foot rail, and together they make the rectangle that holds the mattress platform level. Without rails, there is nothing for slats or a box spring base to rest on.
Rails and slats do different jobs. Slats run across the bed from one side rail to the other and are the surface the mattress or box spring touches. Rails run the length of the bed and carry the weight of the sleepers and the mattress down to the legs. On most platform and upholstered king beds the rails sit inside the fabric, so you never see them, but they still decide whether the bed stays flat.
Why King Beds Need a Centre Support Rail
A king bed needs a centre support rail because its slats would otherwise span the full 76-inch width (193 cm) with nothing underneath. The Engineering ToolBox beam tables show why. For a load at the middle of a beam supported at both ends, the bend grows with the cube of the span, so halving a slat's span from about 76 inches to about 38 inches means the same slat under the same load bends roughly one eighth as much.
A centre rail runs head to foot under the middle of every slat, resting on two or more legs. When it is missing, the slats bow, the bow shows up as a valley down the middle, and the comfort layers of your king size mattress wear out early.

Split King Rails and Twin XL Bases
A split king is two Twin XL mattresses side by side. The Better Sleep Council lists a Twin XL at 38 by 80 inches and notes that two of them pushed together are about the size of a king. On split king adjustable beds, each half sits on its own base, so there is no long slat span at all.

How Long Are the Side Rails for a King Size Bed?
The side rails for a standard king size bed are built around the 80-inch mattress length set out in our king size mattress dimensions guide, so expect rails of about 80 inches, sometimes a little longer to leave room at the hooks. A queen is also 80 inches long, which is why many hardware rail sets are sold as "queen/king" side rails. The width is what changes, and the head rail, foot rail and slats carry that difference.

King and full bed frame rails are not interchangeable. A full is 5 inches shorter and 23 inches narrower, so full side rails leave the foot of a king mattress hanging. California king rails are 4 inches longer than king rails, so they leave a gap at the head or foot of a standard king.
What Bed Rail Is Suitable for a King Size Bed?
A suitable safety bed rail for a king size bed is one its maker says fits your mattress thickness and bed type, and that leaves no gap between rail and mattress. For children, Health Canada recommends rails that meet the latest ASTM International standard. - "Never place a child who is under two years old on a bed fitted with portable bed rails."
- "Use portable bed rails only on a bed that has both a box spring and mattress, unless otherwise instructed by the manufacturer."
- "Before each bedtime and naptime, check that the portable bed rails are securely in place and that there are no gaps between the mattress and the bed rail."
- "Pillows and toys should not be placed against the bed rail because a child can suffocate on them if their face becomes pressed up against them."
- "Health Canada recommends buying only portable bed rails that meet the latest ASTM International standard. Ask before you buy."
Many king platform beds have no box spring, so ask the rail maker first. If you are unsure whether a rail suits your child, ask your child's doctor.
Bed Rails for Seniors and Adults on a King Bed
Bed rails for seniors carry a real entrapment risk. The Health Canada fact sheet on bed rails in hospitals, nursing homes and home health care reports that between 1980 and April 2008, "Health Canada received 67 reports of life-threatening bed entrapments, 36 of which led to deaths." It lists where people got caught: "openings within the bed rails, between the bed rails and mattresses, under bed rails, between split rails, and between the bed rails and headboard or footboard." It also tells care teams to reassure families "that in many cases the patient can sleep safely without bed rails."
Recalls happen. In May 2024 Health Canada published a recall of Medline Adult Portable Bed Rails (RA-75572) because users "can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress." The company reported 5,523 units sold in Canada between February 2013 and March 2024. Check the Government of Canada recalls site before you buy or reuse any rail, and ask the person's doctor or home care team before a rail goes on.
The only safety side rails Mattress Miracle sells are the Orthex Sophia retractable side rails, $399.99 for the half-length set of two and $499.99 for the full-length set. They are made for the Orthex Sophia 2, 3 and 4 adjustable beds only, so they are not king rails and will not fit a standard king frame.
Alternatives to Bed Rails for Children and Adults
For a young child, Health Canada's sleep guide suggests that you "keep the floor area around the bed clear, or use a crib mattress on the floor beside the bed." For adults, the Health Canada fact sheet points care teams toward beds that lower close to the floor, mats beside the bed where they do not add a greater risk of accident, mobility aids and frequent checks. If the care team suggests a lower bed, a low platform bed is one option to discuss with them: Beaudoin lists its Level platform at 13 inches tall.
Health Canada on Bed Rail Entrapment
Health Canada's 2024 Is Your Child Safe? Sleep Time guide warns that portable bed rails "can cause your child to become trapped if not used properly." Report any consumer bed rail incident to Health Canada through its Consumer Product Incident Report Form. If someone is caught in a rail and struggling to breathe, call 9-1-1.

King mattress rails come in steel, wood or a mix of the two.
Metal Bed Rails for a King Bed
Metal bed rails, covered for smaller beds in our guide to twin metal bed frame rails, are the most common type on contemporary frames. They are usually steel bent into an L, U or C channel and powder-coated. Most connect with hook-on hardware: hooks on the rail ends drop into slotted plates on the headboard and footboard posts, so the bed comes apart without tools. The weak point is noise, as steel-on-steel contact starts to squeak once the pads and inserts compress.
Wooden Bed Rails for a King Size Bed
Wooden bed rails are the traditional choice. They usually bolt on with barrel nuts and an Allen key, and they are quieter than steel. Wood moves with the seasons, swelling in a humid Ontario summer and shrinking under winter heating, so bolted joints need a seasonal check. Metal and Wood Hybrid Bed Rails
Some frames use steel side rails with a wood slat ledge fixed inside the channel: the steel gives stiffness and the wood gives the slats a quieter seat. You find this build in platform beds and upholstered frames where the rail is hidden under fabric.
Adjustable King Bed Rails That Extend
Some rail kits telescope to fit several sizes, often queen through California king. They suit a household that changes mattress sizes between moves, but the sliding joint is a weak point, so check and tighten the locking hardware once a year.
Weight Capacity for King Bed Rails
Weight capacity for king bed rails is a rating for the whole sleep system: the king mattress itself, both sleepers and anything stored on the bed. Each maker sets its own figure, and there is no single number for every king frame, so read the listing or ask for the rating in writing.
Beaudoin publishes clear figures for its Level platform: 600 lb at the 39-inch widths, 850 lb at 54 and 60 inches, and 1,200 lb at 78 inches, the width of its split king. For a heavier household, also look at the centre rail: three or more legs shorten the unsupported span of the centre rail itself.
Steel Gauge and Load Capacity in Bed Rails
For steel rails, wall thickness, called gauge, is a large part of the strength. A lower gauge number means thicker steel. The MakerVerse sheet metal chart lists standard steel at these thicknesses:

King Bed Slat Spacing by Mattress Type
King bed slat spacing decides whether a mattress stays flat or sinks between the bars. Our advice at Mattress Miracle is a gap of 3 inches or less under foam, latex or hybrid mattresses, and some foam makers ask for tighter. The warranty card that comes with your mattress sets the real limit, so read it before the frame arrives.

The slat count follows from simple arithmetic. King slats sit along the 80-inch length, so 3-inch-wide slats with 3-inch gaps work out to about 14 full-width slats, or about 28 half slats on a frame that splits them at the centre rail. King Bed Rails for a Headboard and Footboard
King bed rails for a headboard and footboard turn two separate panels into a bed: the side rails hook or bolt into the posts, and a centre rail with legs carries the middle. If you buy a king headboard on its own, you need either a frame with headboard brackets or a full set of rails that matches the connectors on the headboard legs.
Before you order rails, measure three things on the headboard: the distance between its legs, the height of the connector plates or bolt holes, and the connector type, hook-on or bolt-on. Installing King Mattress Rails: What to Check Before You Start
Installing king mattress rails goes faster if you check the parts list first and confirm the rail length matches your mattress, because king and California king sizes take different rails.
- Hook-on rails: angle the rail down, slot the hooks into the post plates, then lower it level and push each joint in and down until there is no side-to-side play.
- Bolt-on rails: drop the barrel nuts into the posts first, snug every bolt by hand, then tighten all four corners evenly.
- Centre rail: fix it to the head and foot crossbars, adjust the legs until every foot touches the floor without rocking, then press down between each pair of legs. If the rail bows under light hand pressure, the legs are too far apart or the rail is too light for a king.
Maintaining King Bed Rails
Maintaining king bed rails means a once-a-year look at every joint with the mattress off. On steel rails, look for cracks at the hook cut-outs. On solid wood frames, look for splits around the bolt holes. Replace cracked or missing glide caps on the centre legs, and on thick carpet check that the legs still reach the subfloor.
How to Stop Squeaky Bed Rails
Squeaky bed rails almost always come from metal rubbing on metal: at the hooks, where slats sit on the rail, or where legs meet the rail. Felt pads between slats and the rail ledge help, as do a little beeswax or dry lubricant on hook contact points and a pass with the Allen key. A mattress sliding off the frame is more common on smooth steel slats than on fabric or wood decks. Non-slip gripper pads fix most cases, and a thin bunkie board that reaches the rail edges fixes the rest.

A king mattress sagging in the middle often points to the frame first: a missing centre rail, centre legs that have lost contact with the floor, or too few slats for the mattress type. Check all three before you blame the mattress, since mattress warranties are written around proper support.
Bed Rail Separation at the Headboard or Footboard
Bed rail separation at the headboard or footboard usually means a hook-on joint has worn, since the slots widen a little every time the bed comes apart. If a joint shows visible play, replace the rail hardware or the rails; tape or foam shims are only a short-term patch.
