Quick Answer: It is nearly impossible to reach a lethal dose of melatonin. In animal studies, the lethal dose (LD50) was so high it couldn't be accurately determined. However, taking a high dose (30mg+) can cause "melatonin toxicity", which feels terrible (nausea, dizziness, nightmares, tremors) but is not life-threatening.

Reading Time: 4 minutes
You accidentally took two 10mg pills instead of one. Or your toddler ate half a bottle of "sleepy gummies." Panic sets in. "Is this lethal?"
At Mattress Miracle, we aren't a poison control center, but we help anxious sleepers every day. The short answer is: You are safe. The long answer explains why you might feel awful tomorrow morning.
Why You Can't Die from It
In toxicology, the "LD50" is the dose required to kill 50% of test subjects.
Scientists have tried to find the lethal dose of melatonin in mice. They gave them massive amounts - equivalent to a human eating thousands of bottles at once. The mice didn't die.
Because melatonin is a hormone your body produces naturally, your system has robust ways to break it down. Unlike Tylenol (which destroys the liver at high doses) or opioids (which stop breathing), melatonin doesn't shut down vital organs.
What an "Overdose" Actually Feels Like
Just because it won't kill you doesn't mean it's fun. A "functional overdose" occurs at doses as low as 10-20mg for sensitive people.
Symptoms of Toxicity:
- Extreme Drowsiness: You might sleep for 12 hours and still wake up exhausted.
- Nausea and Vomiting: Your stomach rejects the excess.
- Hypothermia: Melatonin drops body temperature. You might shiver uncontrollably.
- Vivid Nightmares: The most common sign. Your brain is locked in hyper-intense REM sleep.
- Anxiety: Paradoxically, high doses can trigger a "fight or flight" adrenaline response.
Special Warning for Kids
While melatonin itself isn't lethal, the other ingredients in gummies can be dangerous in high amounts.
If a child eats 50 gummies, they aren't just getting melatonin; they are getting massive amounts of sugar, gelatin, and possibly other additives. This can cause severe stomach upset, diarrhea, and dehydration.
Note: If your child ingests a large amount, call Poison Control immediately to be safe, but know that the melatonin itself is unlikely to cause permanent harm.
What to Do if You Took Too Much
If you realize you took 50mg instead of 5mg:
- Do NOT Drive: You will be severely impaired.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink water to help your kidneys flush the hormone.
- Expect a Rough Night: You will likely have weird dreams and wake up sweaty.
- Prepare for Tomorrow: You will have a "melatonin hangover." Plan to get bright sunlight in your eyes immediately upon waking to burn off the fog.
The "Panic" Effect
Brad notes that often, the fear of the overdose keeps people awake longer than the pill itself. If you took too much, accept that you will be groggy, but remind yourself you are safe. Anxiety fights the sleep aid.

Call 519-770-0001Is there an antidote?
No. There is no "Narcan for melatonin." You just have to wait for your liver to metabolize it. This usually takes 4-8 hours for the acute effects to wear off.
Does it cause brain damage?
No. Studies show no evidence of neurotoxicity even at massive doses. It acts as an antioxidant in the brain, which is actually protective (though that doesn't mean you should megadose).
Can I go into a coma?
Extremely unlikely. You will fall into a very deep sleep (heavy sedation), but you will still breathe and your heart will beat. It is not a respiratory depressant like alcohol or opioids.
Why does the bottle say "Do not exceed"?
To prevent the side effects listed above (dizziness, nausea). It is a liability warning, not a "this will kill you" warning.
