Mattress in a Pickup Truck Ontario: Safe Transport Tips

Every weekend across Ontario, someone is driving down the highway with a mattress in the back of a pickup truck, one corner flapping in the wind and no straps in sight. Sometimes they make it. Sometimes they do not, and a mattress on the 401 at 110 kilometres per hour becomes everyone's problem.

Transporting a mattress in a pickup truck is not complicated if you do it correctly. But "correctly" has some specific requirements in Ontario that many people do not know about until they are holding a fine or, worse, dealing with an accident.

Ontario Highway Traffic Act and Load Rules

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) governs how loads are secured on vehicles. The relevant provisions for mattress transport fall under Section 111, which addresses load security requirements for motor vehicles.

The Legal Requirements

Under Ontario law, any load carried on a vehicle must be:

• Secured so it cannot shift, fall off, or blow away during normal driving and braking
• Covered if necessary to prevent the load or any part of it from becoming dislodged
• Within legal overhang limits for the vehicle

For pickup trucks specifically, the load (including a mattress) may extend beyond the rear of the truck box, but only up to a specific limit. Ontario permits a rear overhang of no more than 1.5 metres (approximately 5 feet) beyond the rear of the truck. If the overhang exceeds 1 metre (approximately 3.3 feet), a red flag or light must be attached to the end of the load.

Fines and Penalties

An unsecured or improperly secured load under the HTA can result in:

• A fine of $65 to $500 for the initial offence
• Additional charges if the unsecured load causes an accident or property damage
• Civil liability for any damage or injury caused by a load that falls from your vehicle

If a mattress falls from your truck on a highway and causes an accident, you can face both a traffic fine and civil liability for damages to other vehicles, injuries, and property. This is not a hypothetical risk. It happens every year on Ontario highways.

How to Properly Secure a Mattress in a Truck

Here is a step-by-step process for safely loading and securing a mattress in a pickup truck.

Step 1: Check the Mattress Size Against the Truck Box

Before loading, confirm that the mattress fits within manageable dimensions relative to the truck box. A standard 6-foot pickup truck box has inside dimensions of approximately 72 inches (length) by 50 inches (width). Mattress dimensions:

• Twin: 38 x 75 inches (fits in most full-size truck boxes lying flat, slight overhang at length)
• Double: 54 x 75 inches (fits flat in width, overhang at length)
• Queen: 60 x 80 inches (tight in width, overhang at length)
• King: 76 x 80 inches (too wide to lie flat in a standard truck box, must be angled or transported on edge)

A queen or king mattress on edge is unstable and very difficult to secure safely. These sizes are generally better transported in a covered moving truck or by professional delivery service.

Step 2: Use a Mattress Bag

Before loading, put the mattress in a plastic mattress bag. This protects it from road dirt, grease, moisture from the truck bed, and debris from other vehicles. Mattress bags are available at moving supply stores for $10 to $20. This step is easy to skip and easy to regret when your new mattress arrives home with a grease stain from the truck bed.

Step 3: Load Flat in the Truck Box

Lay the mattress flat in the truck box. Do not lean it on edge unless the mattress is a rigid foam type. Innerspring and pocket coil mattresses on edge are unstable and can flex and shift during transport. Flat is always safer.

Clear the truck bed of any debris, tools, or sharp objects before loading. A screw or sharp edge can puncture the mattress bag and damage the fabric or foam during transport.

Step 4: Use Proper Tie-Down Straps

This is where most DIY transport goes wrong. Ratchet tie-down straps are required for mattress transport. Bungee cords are not adequate. A mattress catches wind like a sail at highway speed, and bungee cords do not have the tensile strength to hold against that force.

Use a minimum of two ratchet tie-down straps, one near the front of the mattress and one near the rear. The straps should cross over the top of the mattress and hook to the tie-down points in the truck bed. Tighten until the mattress is firmly compressed and cannot shift side to side or lift at the corners.

For a queen or king mattress, use three straps: front, middle, and rear.

Step 5: Add a Red Flag or Light if Overhanging

If the mattress overhangs the rear of the truck by more than 1 metre, attach a red flag (minimum 30 cm x 30 cm) or a red light to the protruding end. This is an Ontario legal requirement and alerts following drivers to the extended load.

Step 6: Drive Appropriately

With a mattress in the truck bed, reduce highway speed. At 100-110 km/h, wind pressure on a mattress is significant even with proper straps. Staying at 90 km/h or below reduces the wind load substantially and gives you more reaction time if anything shifts. Avoid sudden braking and sharp corners. Check the load in your mirrors every 15 to 20 minutes during the trip.

Mattress Sizes and Truck Box Compatibility

Understanding which mattress sizes are reasonable to transport in a pickup truck helps you decide whether DIY transport is practical for your situation.

Twin Mattress (38 x 75 inches)

The most manageable size for pickup truck transport. A twin lies flat with the width well within the truck box. The 75-inch length overhangs a 72-inch (6-foot) box by only 3 inches, which is negligible. Twin mattresses are also lighter than larger sizes, making loading easier for one or two people.

Double Mattress (54 x 75 inches)

Manageable in most full-size pickup trucks. The 54-inch width fits within the box. The length overhangs slightly. Two people can manage the loading. A manageable DIY transport if properly strapped.

Queen Mattress (60 x 80 inches)

Possible but challenging. The 60-inch width is close to the inner width of most truck boxes (about 50 to 52 inches for standard half-tons). A queen mattress laid flat in a standard truck box will overhang the sides slightly, which creates additional wind drag. The 80-inch length overhangs a 72-inch box by 8 inches. With proper straps and a red flag, it can be done. But it is significantly more difficult than a twin or double, and the risk of damage or movement during transport is higher.

King Mattress (76 x 80 inches)

A king mattress is 76 inches wide, which significantly exceeds the inner width of a standard pickup truck box. It cannot lie flat. If transported on edge, it becomes a wall of mattress that catches wind aggressively and is difficult to secure against lateral movement. We strongly recommend professional delivery for king mattresses. The handling logistics simply do not work safely in most pickup trucks.

Risks of Improper Mattress Transport

Understanding the specific risks helps you make an informed decision about DIY transport versus professional delivery.

Road Hazard and Liability

A mattress that flies off a pickup truck on the 401 does not just create a hazard for the driver who lost it. It becomes a projectile or road obstacle for every vehicle behind it. Drivers swerve, brake suddenly, and collide. The driver who lost the mattress is legally responsible for any damage or injury that results.

Ontario courts have consistently held that vehicle owners are liable for loads that separate from their vehicles when those loads were inadequately secured. The financial exposure from a highway accident caused by a loose mattress far exceeds the cost of professional delivery.

Mattress Damage

An improperly secured mattress shifts during transport, flexing in ways that damage internal components. Pocket coil mattresses that are allowed to flex significantly can experience coil-to-coil contact and binding that permanently affects the coil performance. Foam mattresses that are compressed by tight straps without protection can develop permanent indentations.

A mattress that arrives home damaged from transport cannot be returned to the store for warranty claim, because transport damage is not a manufacturing defect. The cost of transport damage falls entirely on the owner.

Personal Injury During Loading

Mattresses are heavy and awkward. A queen mattress weighs 50 to 80 kilograms. Loading it into a truck bed without proper help or equipment puts significant stress on the back and shoulders. Back injuries from mattress loading and unloading are common enough that they are a recognized occupational hazard in the mattress and moving industries.

Professional delivery teams use proper equipment and techniques to move mattresses safely. They are also insured for any damage that occurs during delivery.

Damage Prevention During Transport

If you are transporting a mattress yourself, these steps protect the mattress from damage during the trip.

Never Transport a Mattress Wet

If it is raining, either delay the transport or wrap the mattress completely in a waterproof cover or plastic sheeting before loading. A wet mattress develops mould in the internal layers within days, and the damage is permanent. The inside of the mattress stays damp long after the exterior appears dry.

Protect the Corners

Corners are the most vulnerable part of a mattress during transport. They catch on the truck tailgate, on doorframes during unloading, and on stairway walls. Use mattress corner protectors (cardboard squares work well as a cheap alternative) to prevent tearing at the corners during loading and unloading.

Keep It Flat During the Trip

Do not let anyone ride in the truck bed on top of the mattress (beyond the obvious safety issue, compressed foam from a person's weight can develop permanent impressions). Do not stack other items on top of the mattress during transport. The mattress should be the topmost item in the load.

Watch the Straps Mid-Trip

Ratchet straps can loosen slightly as a mattress compresses or shifts slightly during the first few kilometres. Pull over 10 to 15 minutes into the trip and re-check all straps. Retighten if any tension has been lost. This one stop can prevent a problem on the highway later. Do the same check after any significant turn or hard brake during the trip. A quick re-tighten takes 60 seconds and adds significant safety margin for the rest of the journey.

Unload the Same Day

Do not leave a mattress in a truck bed overnight, especially in Ontario's variable weather. Morning dew condenses on the plastic bag and can seep in if the bag has any gaps. Temperature swings in spring and fall are particularly extreme in Ontario, sometimes ranging from 15 degrees Celsius in the afternoon to near freezing overnight. These swings affect foam density and can cause slight deformation in comfort layers if a mattress is left exposed overnight. Plan to load, transport, and unload in a single day and get the mattress onto its frame as quickly as possible after arrival.

When Professional Delivery Makes More Sense

DIY pickup truck transport makes sense in limited situations. Here is an honest assessment of when to use it and when professional delivery is the better choice.

DIY Transport Makes Sense When:

• The mattress is a twin or double size
• The destination is close (under 30 kilometres, no highway driving)
• You have a pickup truck with proper tie-down points and ratchet straps
• Two people are available to load and unload safely
• The weather is dry
• The delivery location has easy ground-floor access

Professional Delivery Makes More Sense When:

• The mattress is a queen or king size
• The trip involves highway driving at speed
• You are alone or cannot safely lift and carry the mattress
• The destination involves stairs, narrow hallways, or elevator access
• You do not have ratchet straps (bungee cords are not acceptable)
• It is raining or the weather is uncertain
• The mattress is new and still in retail packaging (easier to damage)
