The Natura Ultimate is Natura's flagship pillow, and it has been their best-selling product since the brand launched. That kind of staying power is unusual in bedding, where trends come and go with every sleep influencer video. The Ultimate has stayed popular because it does something simple well: it supports your head and neck without trapping heat, and it does not flatten after six months.

We have carried the Natura Ultimate at Mattress Miracle in Brantford for years. This review covers what we have learned from our own testing and from customer feedback, including the things Natura's marketing does not mention.

What Makes the Ultimate Different

The Natura Ultimate uses a solid ventilated Talalay latex core rather than shredded fill. This is the most important distinction to understand before you read anything else about this pillow.

Shredded latex pillows let you adjust the loft by adding or removing fill. That sounds great in theory, but shredded fill clusters, shifts, and creates uneven support over time. You end up fluffing and redistributing fill constantly.

The Ultimate's solid core holds its shape permanently. The ventilation holes throughout the latex create consistent airflow and a slight buoyancy. When you press into it, it compresses evenly and springs back immediately. There is no slow sink like memory foam. The response is instant.

Between the core and the outer cotton terry cover, Natura adds a thin layer of their NaturaWool (washable Smart Wool) at 100gsm. This wool liner is 1/8" to 1/4" thick and serves two purposes: moisture wicking and initial conformity. The wool compresses first to fill the micro-contours of your head and neck, while the latex core handles the structural support underneath.

The Talalay Latex Core: Why It Matters

Ventilation Design

The solid Talalay core has ventilation holes punched throughout. These are not cosmetic. They create channels for air to move through the pillow as you shift positions. Unlike memory foam, which traps body heat in its dense cell structure, the ventilated Talalay design actively promotes airflow. This is the primary reason latex pillows sleep 2-3 degrees cooler than comparable memory foam pillows.

Responsiveness

Latex has a natural bounce that memory foam does not. When you press into the Natura Ultimate, it compresses and immediately pushes back. This means your head does not slowly sink deeper through the night (a common complaint with memory foam). The support level at 2 a.m. is the same as when you first lay down. For side sleepers who need consistent neck support through the night, this responsiveness is a significant advantage.

The Wool Liner: An Underrated Feature

Most pillow reviews skip the wool liner entirely. We think it is one of the things that makes the Ultimate genuinely better than a bare latex pillow.

Wool is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture vapour without feeling wet. Your head generates heat and perspiration during sleep. The wool liner absorbs that moisture before it reaches the latex core, keeping the sleeping surface drier. It also adds a subtle softness over the firm latex that makes the initial feel more approachable.

What We Like

It Lasts

Latex does not break down the way memory foam or polyester fill does. The cellular structure is naturally resilient. We have customers using Natura latex pillows for 4-5 years with no noticeable loss of support. The 5-year warranty is appropriate for the material's actual lifespan.

No Chemical Smell

New memory foam pillows often have a chemical off-gassing odour that takes days or weeks to dissipate. The Natura Ultimate has minimal odour out of the box. The Talalay latex may have a faint natural rubber scent initially, but it dissipates within a day or two. The OEKO-TEX and Eco-Institute certifications confirm the materials meet air quality standards.

Triple Certification

OEKO-TEX (textile safety), FSC (sustainable forestry for the latex sourcing), and Eco-Institute (air quality and emissions). Three independent certifications is unusual for a pillow at this price point. For customers who care about material safety, especially parents buying for a child's room, these certifications provide real assurance.

Genuinely Hypoallergenic

Natural latex is inherently resistant to dust mites, mould, and mildew. The wool liner adds an additional antimicrobial layer. For allergy sufferers in the Brantford area, where seasonal pollen can already disrupt sleep, a pillow that does not harbour additional allergens makes a meaningful difference.

What We Do Not Like

The Price

At $209 for a Queen, the Natura Ultimate is not an impulse purchase. It costs 2-3x more than a decent memory foam pillow. You are paying for Talalay latex (expensive to produce), the wool liner, triple certification, and Canadian assembly. We think the value is there over a 5-year lifespan ($0.11 per night), but the upfront cost will stop budget-conscious shoppers.

Not Adjustable

The solid core means you cannot remove fill to change the loft. At 6-7 inches, the Ultimate has one height. It works well for average-to-broad-shouldered side sleepers. Petite sleepers or those who prefer a thin, flat pillow will find it too tall. There is no way to customise it.

Heavy

Solid latex is dense. The Queen Ultimate weighs noticeably more than a down or polyester pillow. This is not an issue for sleep (you do not feel the weight while lying down), but it makes flipping and repositioning the pillow less convenient than lighter alternatives.

Cotton Terry Cover Could Be Better

The removable cotton terry cover is functional and machine washable, which is great. But it feels utilitarian compared to the velvet cover on the Natura Luscious. At $209, we would expect a slightly more premium cover fabric. Most customers end up using their own pillowcase over it anyway, which makes this a minor complaint.

Our Showroom Testing Notes

At our Brantford showroom, we test pillows on actual mattresses, not isolated displays. The Natura Ultimate feels different on a firm mattress versus a plush one.

On a firm mattress: your shoulder does not sink far, so the Ultimate's 6-inch height fills the gap between shoulder and ear effectively. This is the best pairing for side sleepers.

On a plush mattress: your shoulder sinks deeper into the mattress, reducing the gap. The Ultimate may feel slightly too tall in this scenario, pushing your head higher than ideal. If you sleep on a plush surface, try the Ultimate before buying to make sure the height works.

Care and Maintenance

• Cover: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Do not tumble dry. Air dry or lay flat.
• Latex core: Never machine wash. Spot clean with damp cloth only.
• Wool liner: Stays attached to cover. Washes with it on gentle cycle.
• Airing: Remove the cover and air the latex core in a well-ventilated area every few months. Do not expose to direct sunlight (UV degrades latex).
