Novosbed Trial Period Canada: The 120-Night Policy, the Comfort+ Kit, and What Buyers Need to Know

The Trial That Started Canadian DTC Mattresses

Before Casper, before Douglas, before anyone was buying a mattress online in Canada without lying on it first, Novosbed launched what they called "the world's first 120-night sleep trial." That claim was bold and largely accurate for the Canadian market. The year was 2013, and the idea that you could return a used mattress without paying a restocking fee was genuinely new.

Since then, Canadian online mattress brands have extended their trials considerably. Douglas - Novosbed's sibling brand under GoodMorning.com - now offers 365 nights. Novosbed has kept its 120-night policy unchanged. That is not necessarily a problem. A 120-night trial is still four full months, covering two full seasonal transitions in Canada. But it is worth understanding what you are working with before you order.

It is also worth noting upfront: many review sites currently describe Novosbed's Comfort+ firmness adjustment kit as if it were still available. It was discontinued in April 2023. We will explain what that means for buyers today.

What the 120-Night Trial Actually Covers

The Novosbed trial window runs from delivery date to day 120. Before you can initiate a return, you must sleep on the mattress for at least 21 nights. After that, any time up to day 120, you can contact Novosbed to begin the return process.

The trial covers the mattress only. Bedding, pillows, and accessories purchased alongside are not returnable after use. If your mattress arrives damaged or materially different from its listed specs, that falls under different consumer protection provisions and is handled separately from the sleep trial.

Condition requirements matter. Novosbed's terms state the returned mattress must be in good condition - no burns, cuts, tears, stains, or signs of bodily fluid contact. A mattress that has been used on a bed frame with no slatted support, or stored in a wet area, may not qualify for a return under the trial. These are reasonable conditions, but they are not prominently displayed in the marketing materials.

The 120-night clock does not pause or reset. If you move during the trial period, you are still working within the same window from original delivery.

The Comfort+ Kit: What It Was and Why It's Gone

The Comfort+ kit was one of Novosbed's defining features. If you bought a Novosbed and found the firmness wrong after your break-in period, you could request a free foam topper layer that would be added under the zip cover to adjust the feel. A too-firm mattress could be made softer. A soft mattress could be firmed up slightly. It was a clever way to reduce actual returns by giving buyers a second option before initiating a full pickup.

As of April 20, 2023, new Novosbed purchases no longer qualify for a Comfort+ kit.

GoodMorning.com did not issue a public explanation for the discontinuation. The most likely reason is cost - the kits were expensive to produce and ship, and their value was effectively baked into return rate reduction. With the evolution of Novosbed's firmness options (Soft, Medium, and Firm are all available at purchase), the company appears to have concluded that buyers should select their firmness upfront rather than adjust after delivery.

This matters because a significant portion of Novosbed reviews still online were written before April 2023. When a reviewer says "if the firmness is wrong, Novosbed will send you a free adjustment layer," that advice is now outdated. If you order a Novosbed today and the firmness is wrong for you, your option is a full return - not an adjustment.

The Firmness Challenge: Choosing Before You Sleep

Novosbed sells one mattress in three firmness options. Before you add to cart, you choose Soft, Medium, or Firm. There is no middle ground between those options. The Medium is described as "balanced support and comfort for any sleeping position" - which is genuinely useful for buyers who do not already know their preference.

The firmness challenge for online buyers is real. Research on mattress selection published in the Journal of Consumer Research has documented that buyers routinely misjudge comfort preferences when they have only digital information to work with. Body weight, sleep position, chronic pain patterns, and sleeping temperature all interact with mattress firmness in ways that are genuinely difficult to predict from a product description.

Novosbed does provide a basic firmness guide. Their recommendation is roughly:

• Soft: Side sleepers, lighter body weights (under ~65 kg), those with hip and shoulder pressure point concerns
• Medium: Combination sleepers, average body weight (65-100 kg), buyers who are unsure
• Firm: Back and stomach sleepers, heavier body weights (over 100 kg), those who prefer minimal sink

One honest caveat from customer feedback and independent testing: heavier sleepers and dedicated stomach sleepers sometimes find that even the Firm option does not provide enough resistance. Novosbed is a foam mattress. Without a coil system, the upper weight limit for comfortable support sits lower than it would for a hybrid or innerspring design. This is not a flaw in the product - it is a characteristic of all-foam construction. But it is worth knowing before you order.

Return Logistics: What the Process Looks Like

Novosbed's return process runs through GoodMorning.com's customer service team. You initiate by contacting them directly - there is no self-serve return portal. After your request is received and approved, they coordinate a pickup with local partners: charities, recyclers, or contracted movers depending on your location in Canada.

The sequence in practice:

1. Contact Novosbed by email or chat after your 21st night and before your 120th night
2. Receive written confirmation from Novosbed that your return is approved before taking any further action
3. Novosbed schedules a pickup with a local partner in your area
4. Wrap the mattress in plastic (your responsibility) for transport
5. Be home for the scheduled pickup window
6. Refund issued within two business days of confirmed collection
7. Allow 2-5 additional banking days for funds to appear

There are no shipping charges or restocking fees deducted from your refund. The full original purchase price is returned.

Pickup timing varies significantly by location. The GoodMorning.com pickup network is denser in major Ontario cities - Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Kitchener. In smaller communities like Brantford, Paris, or Woodstock, the scheduling window may be longer. Novosbed does not publish average pickup timelines for specific regions.

One practical note: the 120-night window does not extend to accommodate slow pickup scheduling. If you request a return on day 115 and the earliest available pickup is day 125, you should clarify with Novosbed customer service whether the return request date or the pickup date governs the trial expiry. Document your request clearly.

Novosbed vs Other GoodMorning.com Trials

Novosbed, Douglas, Logan and Cove, and Juno are all GoodMorning.com brands. They share ownership, customer service infrastructure, and return logistics - but their trial periods differ.

All four brands run through the same pickup network when returns occur. If you are considering a GoodMorning.com mattress primarily because of the trial period, Douglas offers three times the window for broadly similar pricing. The reason to choose Novosbed over Douglas is the mattress itself - all-memory-foam construction, published foam density specs, and three firmness options - not the trial length.

Novosbed Pricing and the Premium Foam Question

Novosbed's queen mattress starts around $999 to $1,099 depending on firmness and any current promotions. The brand has historically positioned itself as the premium all-foam option in the GoodMorning.com lineup - more expensive than Douglas, less expensive than Logan and Cove.

The honest question at the $999-$1,100 price point is whether you prefer the feel of premium memory foam or a coil-supported innerspring. These are different sleeping experiences. Memory foam offers deep contouring and motion isolation. An innerspring hybrid offers more bounce, edge support, and airflow. There is no universally correct answer - but it is the kind of question that becomes much clearer after lying on both options for five minutes in a showroom than it does after reading both product pages for an hour.

If you are drawn to the Novosbed's foam density specs, that is legitimate - those numbers do predict durability in a way that most competitor specs do not. If you are drawn to the trial period as a substitute for trying the mattress in person, that is worth thinking more carefully about.

When 120 Nights Is Not Enough

There is a category of buyer for whom 120 nights of trial - or even 365 - does not fully solve the problem. These are buyers who genuinely need to know their mattress is right before it enters their bedroom.

People with active lower back injuries, recovering from surgery, dealing with scoliosis or disc herniation, managing fibromyalgia or arthritis - these buyers cannot afford 30 nights on the wrong surface to satisfy a break-in requirement. A 2021 study in Sleep Medicine Reviews found that medium-firm mattresses reduced pain and improved sleep quality for participants with chronic low back pain, but firmness perception varied significantly between individuals. The right firmness is personal. The trial period gives you time to confirm that, not a way to find it without testing.
