Quick Answer: In Canada, Standard pillows are 20 x 26 inches (51 x 66 cm), Queen pillows are 20 x 30 inches (51 x 76 cm), and King pillows are 20 x 36 inches (51 x 91 cm). Two Queen pillows span exactly 60 inches, matching a Queen mattress width perfectly. Euro pillows are 26 x 26 inches square, used for decoration rather than sleeping.

Complete Pillow Size Chart
Here are the exact dimensions for every pillow size sold in Canada. These measurements are the same across North America, so Canadian and American pillow sizes are interchangeable.
| Size | Inches | Centimetres | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20 x 26 | 51 x 66 | Twin and double beds, children |
| Super Standard | 20 x 28 | 51 x 71 | Slightly wider, fits double beds well |
| Queen | 20 x 30 | 51 x 76 | Queen beds (most popular in Canada) |
| King | 20 x 36 | 51 x 91 | King and California King beds |
| Euro | 26 x 26 | 66 x 66 | Decorative, leaning against headboard |
| Body | 20 x 54 | 51 x 137 | Side sleepers, pregnancy, hip pain |
| Travel / Toddler | 12 x 16 | 30 x 41 | Carry-on, toddler beds, car travel |
Notice that all sleeping pillow sizes share the same 20-inch (51 cm) width. The only thing that changes is the length. This makes sense because your head is roughly the same width regardless of your bed size. The extra length on Queen and King pillows gives you more room to shift during the night without falling off the pillow.
Why 20 Inches?
The 20-inch width is not arbitrary. It accommodates the average adult head width (about 15 cm or 6 inches) plus enough surrounding pillow surface to support the neck and shoulders during side sleeping. A 2009 study by Gordon et al. in the Journal of Pain Research found that pillow width is less important than pillow height (loft) and firmness for cervical support. The width just needs to prevent your head from rolling off, which 20 inches does comfortably.
Which Pillow Size for Which Bed
This is where most people make their first mistake. The pillow size should match your mattress width, not the other way around. Here is how the math works.
Twin Bed (38 inches wide)
One Standard pillow (26 inches) fits nicely with room on either side. You could use a Queen (30 inches), but it will overhang slightly. There is no reason to put a King pillow on a twin bed.
Double / Full Bed (54 inches wide)
Two Standard pillows (2 x 26 = 52 inches) fit almost perfectly. Two Queen pillows (2 x 30 = 60 inches) will overhang by about 3 inches on each side. For couples on a double bed, two Standard pillows are the right call.
Queen Bed (60 inches wide)
Two Queen pillows (2 x 30 = 60 inches) span the mattress exactly. This is the ideal pairing and the most common setup in Canadian bedrooms. Two Standard pillows (52 inches) leave 8 inches of bare mattress at the edges, which looks sparse. If you want a layered look, put two Euro pillows behind two Queen pillows.
King Bed (76 inches wide)
Two King pillows (2 x 36 = 72 inches) leave a 4-inch gap in the centre. Some people fill this with a decorative pillow. Three Standard pillows (3 x 26 = 78 inches) actually fit better width-wise, if you do not mind the triple-pillow look.
For a California King bed (72 inches wide), two King pillows are an exact match.
Quick Reference: Bed to Pillow Matching
- Twin (38"): 1 Standard
- Double (54"): 2 Standard
- Queen (60"): 2 Queen

Pillowcase Size Matching
Buying the wrong pillowcase size is one of those small annoyances that is easy to avoid once you know the rules.
Pillowcase Dimensions
Pillowcases are slightly larger than the pillows they hold. After sewing, a typical pillowcase has about 1 to 2 inches of ease on each dimension, so the pillow fits inside without stretching the fabric. Standard pillowcases fit Standard and Super Standard pillows. Queen pillowcases fit Queen pillows. King pillowcases fit King pillows.
| Pillowcase Size | Interior Dimensions (approx.) | Fits Pillow Size |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20.5 x 27 inches | Standard (20 x 26) |
| Queen | 20.5 x 31 inches | Queen (20 x 30) |
| King | 20.5 x 37 inches | King (20 x 36) |
| Euro Sham | 26.5 x 26.5 inches | Euro (26 x 26) |
Sheet Set Pillowcases
When you buy a sheet set in Canada, the included pillowcases match the bed size:
- Twin and Double sets: 2 Standard pillowcases
- Queen sets: 2 Queen pillowcases
- King sets: 2 King pillowcases
This matters if you have Queen pillows but buy a King sheet set for your new bed. The King pillowcases will be too long for your Queen pillows, leaving a floppy tail of extra fabric. Not a disaster, but it looks sloppy and feels odd. Our French Linen Pillowcases ($65) come in Standard and Queen sizes and feel noticeably different from the polyester-blend cases found in most sheet sets.
The Pillowcase Test
If your pillow is difficult to stuff into the case and the fabric stretches tight, your pillowcase is too small. If the pillow rattles around inside with inches of loose fabric, the case is too big. A properly fitted pillowcase should feel snug but not strained, with the pillow filling the case to the edges without bunching.
Specialty Sizes: Body, Euro, Travel, and Toddler
Body Pillows (20 x 54 inches / 51 x 137 cm)
Body pillows are more than twice the length of a Standard pillow. They are designed for full-body support during side sleeping, pregnancy, and post-surgical recovery. We have a full body pillow guide for Canada if you want to dig deeper into shapes, fills, and positioning.
Euro Pillows (26 x 26 inches / 66 x 66 cm)
Euro pillows are square and primarily decorative. You lean them against the headboard behind your sleeping pillows to create that layered hotel look. They are not designed for sleeping. Most Euro pillows use a firmer fill so they sit upright without flopping over. You can find Euro shams (pillowcases) from most Canadian bedding retailers.
Travel and Toddler Pillows (12 x 16 inches / 30 x 41 cm)
These small pillows are roughly half the size of a Standard pillow. Travel pillows are designed for carry-on bags and car trips. Toddler pillows are the same dimensions, designed for children transitioning from a crib to a toddler bed. The Canadian Paediatric Society does not recommend pillows for children under 12 months due to suffocation risk.
Bolster Pillows (6-9 inches diameter x 18-36 inches long)
Cylindrical pillows used for neck support, lumbar support when sitting in bed, or purely decorative purposes. They are less common in Canadian bedrooms but popular in guest rooms and hotel suites.

Common Sizing Mistakes
After 37+ years of selling pillows in Brantford, Brad has seen every pillow sizing mistake in the book. Here are the most common ones.
Using Standard Pillows on a Queen Bed
This is the number one mistake. Standard pillows leave 8 inches of bare mattress visible at the edges. It looks unfinished and, more importantly, your head can slide off the pillow more easily if you shift during the night. Queen pillows cost about the same as Standard, so there is no reason not to size up.
Using King Pillows on a Queen Bed
The opposite problem. Two King pillows on a Queen bed overhang by 12 inches total. They bunch up against the wall or headboard, and the extra length creates an awkward angle under your head if you sleep near the centre. King pillows belong on King beds.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "The mistake I see most often is people keeping pillows for years past their lifespan and then blaming the size. A flat, compressed Queen pillow is not going to feel better if you switch to a King. You need a new pillow, not a bigger one."
Ignoring Loft When Choosing Size
Size tells you the surface area of the pillow. Loft tells you the height. A flat Queen pillow and a puffy Queen pillow have the same dimensions, but they sleep completely differently. Our pillow loft guide covers how to match loft to your sleep position and mattress firmness.
Buying Pillowcases Before Pillows
If you buy a beautiful set of Queen pillowcases and then discover you have Standard pillows, you are stuck with either baggy pillowcases or buying new pillows. Always check your pillow size first. Measure if you are not sure.
Fill Amount and Loft by Size
The same pillow size can feel very different depending on how much fill is inside. Here is a general guide to how fill weight affects loft across sizes.
| Density | Loft (Height) | Best Sleep Position | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft / Low Fill | 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) | Stomach sleepers, back sleepers | Thin, compresses easily |
| Medium Fill | 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) | Back sleepers, combination sleepers | Balanced support and softness |
| Firm / High Fill | 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) | Side sleepers | Dense, holds shape |
Side sleepers need the most loft because the distance between their ear and the mattress is greater. The pillow needs to fill that gap to keep the spine neutral. A Somnia 4.5 Contour Pillow ($124.99) from Orthex is designed specifically for this, with a contoured shape that follows the neck curve.
Our Carmel 725 Loft Down Pillow ($348) is available in soft, medium, and firm densities at the same size, so you can match the fill to your sleep position without changing the size. The Paarizaat MyWonder Pillow ($49.99) lets you add or remove shredded memory foam to customize the loft yourself.

Talia, Showroom Specialist: "When customers come in unsure about pillow sizes, I hand them a Queen and a Standard side by side. The four extra inches on the Queen do not look like much, but once you lie down, you notice you have more room to shift without your head falling off the edge. For most Canadian beds, Queen is the sweet spot."
Frequently Asked Questions
Are pillow sizes the same in Canada and the United States?
Yes. Standard, Queen, King, and Euro pillow dimensions are identical across North America. A Queen pillow bought in Canada (20 x 30 inches) is the same size as one bought in the United States. European sizes differ slightly, so check dimensions if importing from the EU.
Can I use a Standard pillowcase on a Queen pillow?
Technically you can force it on, but the pillow will bunch and compress unevenly inside the too-small case. It affects both comfort and the pillow's lifespan. Use the correct pillowcase size for the best sleep experience.
What pillow size do hotels use in Canada?
Most Canadian hotels use Queen-size pillows (20 x 30 inches) regardless of the bed size in the room. Higher-end hotels often use King pillows on their King beds and layer Euro pillows behind for the display. The "hotel pillow feel" is more about fill quality than size.
How do I measure my pillow to find out what size it is?
Remove the pillowcase and lay the pillow flat on a hard surface. Measure the length and width edge to edge in inches. If it measures roughly 20 x 26, it is Standard. If 20 x 30, Queen. If 20 x 36, King. A tape measure takes ten seconds and prevents buying the wrong pillowcase.
Does Mattress Miracle sell pillow protectors in different sizes?
Yes. We carry pillow protectors that fit Standard and Queen pillow sizes. A protector sits between your pillow and pillowcase, blocking sweat, oils, and dust mites from reaching the fill. It extends your pillow's life significantly. Stop by our West Street showroom or call Talia at (519) 770-0001.
