This question comes up almost every day at our Brantford showroom. Someone walks in looking for a new mattress and asks, "Do I still need a box spring?" The honest answer has changed a lot over the past decade.
Box springs were once the default. Every bedroom set came with one. But mattress construction has evolved, and so have the foundations that support them. Platform beds have become the standard recommendation for most modern mattresses, and for good reasons that go beyond style.
We have sold both for over 37 years at Mattress Miracle. Here is what we have learned about when each option actually makes sense.
What Is a Platform Bed?
A platform bed is a bed frame with a solid or slatted surface that supports your mattress directly. There is no gap, no bounce from springs underneath, and no need for an additional foundation piece. The mattress sits right on top.
Most platform beds use one of three support systems:
- Solid panel base - a flat sheet of plywood or MDF. Maximum firmness, zero flex.
- Wooden slats - individual planks spaced 5-7 cm apart. Allows airflow underneath the mattress.
- Metal grid - steel wire or mesh platform. Common on industrial-style frames like our Hickory Ridge Platform Bed ($170).
The key requirement: slats should be no more than 7.6 cm (3 inches) apart to properly support a foam or hybrid mattress. Wider gaps can cause sagging between slats and void some mattress warranties.

What Is a Box Spring?
A box spring is a wooden frame filled with metal coils or a semi-flex grid, wrapped in fabric, and designed to sit on a bed frame beneath your mattress. It serves three purposes: absorbing shock, adding height, and providing a bit of give beneath the mattress.
Traditional box springs used actual coil springs inside. Modern versions, sometimes called "foundations," often use a rigid wooden grid instead of coils. The distinction matters because a true coiled box spring interacts differently with your mattress than a rigid foundation does.

Which Mattresses Work with Each
This is the most important factor, and it is not close.
Mattress Foundation Compatibility
Platform bed compatible: Memory foam, latex, hybrid, innerspring, flippable, rolled mattresses, and essentially every modern mattress type.
Box spring compatible: Traditional innerspring only. Using a box spring under memory foam or hybrid mattresses can void the warranty and cause premature sagging.
Research published in Applied Ergonomics (Haex, 2004) found that the support surface beneath a mattress directly affects spinal alignment during sleep. A foundation that is too flexible can allow the heaviest body parts to sink unevenly.
Most Restonic mattresses we carry are designed for rigid, flat support. The ComfortCare Queen (1,222 coils, $1,619) and the Revive Tiffany Rose (1,188 coils, Talalay Copper Latex, $1,995) both specify a solid or slatted foundation in their warranty terms.

Durability and Lifespan
A well-built platform bed can last 15 to 25 years. Solid wood frames from manufacturers like Lakewood routinely outlast three or four mattresses. Our St. Jacobs Platform Bed ($980) is built from hardwood that will still be solid decades from now.
Box springs typically last 8 to 10 years. The internal springs or grid gradually lose tension, creating soft spots that transfer through to your mattress. A study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (Jacobson et al., 2009) noted that sleeping surface degradation contributes to increased back pain and reduced sleep quality over time.
Here is a practical test: press down firmly on a box spring in several spots. If you feel noticeable differences in resistance across the surface, it is past its useful life. An uneven foundation creates uneven wear on your mattress above it.

The budget platform bed actually costs less over 20 years than a budget box spring setup that needs replacing twice. And you get a nicer-looking bedroom the entire time.

Box springs run $129.99 to $349.99, but remember you also need a separate bed frame underneath (typically $100-$200 for a basic metal frame). The total starting cost is comparable, but you end up with less style and a shorter lifespan.
Storage and Bedroom Space
Brantford apartments and older homes are not known for generous closet space. This is where platform beds pull ahead significantly.

When a Box Spring Still Makes Sense
We are not here to tell you box springs are obsolete. There are specific situations where they remain the better choice:
- Mobility concerns. If you have knee or hip issues, the extra 20-23 cm of height from a box spring makes getting in and out of bed easier. The Canadian Physiotherapy Association notes that bed height should allow your feet to rest flat on the floor when seated on the mattress edge, with knees at roughly 90 degrees.
- Traditional innerspring mattress. If you own a coil-on-coil mattress and plan to keep it, a box spring is its intended partner. The two spring systems work together.

Can I put a memory foam mattress on a box spring?
Most manufacturers recommend against it. Memory foam needs a rigid, flat surface. A box spring can flex and create uneven support, leading to premature sagging and potentially voiding your warranty. A platform bed or solid foundation is the better choice for memory foam.
Do platform beds make mattresses feel firmer?
Yes, slightly. A solid platform surface provides zero give, so the mattress cannot sink below its own base. If you prefer a softer feel, choose a platform with wooden slats rather than a solid panel. The slats offer a small amount of flex that softens the overall feel.
How much weight can a platform bed hold?
Most quality platform beds support 340-450 kg (750-1,000 lbs) including the mattress and sleepers. Our Canadian Made Platform Bed ($295) uses reinforced slats rated for heavy use. Always check the manufacturer weight rating, especially for king sizes.
Will a platform bed squeak?
Less likely than a box spring. Squeaking comes from metal-on-metal contact or loose joints. Solid wood platform beds like our Breeze have very few connection points. If a platform bed does develop a squeak, tightening the bolts usually solves it. Box spring squeaks come from internal spring wear, which cannot be fixed.
Can I use both a platform bed and a box spring together?
You can, but we generally do not recommend it. Stacking a box spring on a platform bed raises the mattress too high (often over 76 cm total) and can make the bed feel unstable. The one exception is if you specifically need extra height for medical reasons and your mattress requires a box spring. In that case, make sure the platform can handle the combined weight.
