Every Ontario mattress eventually needs to go somewhere. Whether you are buying a new one, clearing out a rental property, or downsizing, the question of what to do with the old mattress is surprisingly complicated -- and increasingly expensive in some regions. The cost and logistics depend entirely on where you live, because Ontario has no province-wide mattress recycling or stewardship program.

This guide compiles what is currently known about mattress disposal fees and options across Ontario's major regions for 2026. Where exact fee schedules are publicly available, we have included them. Where information is less clear, we have noted the uncertainty rather than guessing.

Why Mattress Disposal Fees Vary Across Ontario

Ontario's Blue Box EPR program (O. Reg. 391/21) covers packaging and paper products. Mattresses are a product, not packaging, and they are not covered under the Blue Box regulation. There is no provincial mattress EPR framework comparable to British Columbia's Recycle BC mattress program or Quebec's mattress stewardship organization.

This means each Ontario municipality or regional government manages mattress disposal independently, sets its own fees, and decides how much of the cost to recover through user fees versus absorbing into the property tax base. The result is a patchwork of different programs, fee structures, and access points across the province.

Disposal Fees by Ontario Region (2026)

The information below is drawn from publicly available municipal and regional sources. Fee schedules are updated periodically -- verify with your local waste management department before making plans based on this information.

Niagara Region

Niagara Region added a $10 per-unit surcharge on mattresses and box springs at its landfill facilities, effective February 2024. This surcharge remained in place through 2026. A standard minimum drop-off fee applies, which increased by $1 in March 2026. Niagara Region also offers a free curbside pickup option for oversized items including mattresses -- no surcharge applies to the free pickup program, making this the most practical option for most Niagara households. Peel Region

Peel Region (Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon) charges a minimum of $7 at its Community Recycling Centres (CRCs), with loads above that threshold charged at $0.145 per kilogram. A typical queen mattress weighing 35-45 kg would cost approximately $5-6.50 in weight-based fees beyond the minimum, putting total costs in the $12-15 range for a single mattress. York Region

York Region waste facilities charge fees on a per-tonne basis. Based on available council documentation, York Region's depot fee structure is approximately $170 per tonne. A single queen mattress at 40 kg represents roughly $6.80 in weight-based fees. However, minimum charges and administrative fees may significantly affect the actual cost for a single item. City of Toronto

Toronto residents can set out mattresses for curbside collection as oversized items at no additional charge beyond existing property tax-funded waste services. This is one of the more resident-friendly policies in Ontario for mattress disposal. Mattresses can also be dropped off at the Commissioners Street, Dufferin, or Ingram transfer stations. Toronto's approach is cost-funded through the property tax base rather than user fees for individual items.

Simcoe County

Simcoe County waste drop-off facilities accept mixed waste at $400 per tonne with a $40 minimum charge per load. Specific material streams may be accepted separately. For a single mattress at a mixed-waste rate, the minimum charge may apply even if the load is well under a tonne -- meaning the effective per-mattress cost could be $40 or more if disposing of a single item. Durham Region

Durham Region charges $140 per tonne plus applicable taxes and a fuel surcharge for residential waste disposal at its facilities. Mattresses fall within this category. At 40 kg for a queen mattress, the weight-based cost would be approximately $5.60 before surcharges -- but minimum charges and administrative fees will typically push the per-visit cost higher. Halton Region

Halton Region (Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Halton Hills) operates community recycling centres where mattresses can be dropped off. Halton's fee structure is generally comparable to York Region's approximate range. Halton also offers large item curbside collection programs for eligible items. Curbside vs. Depot Drop-Off: What's Available

Not all Ontario municipalities offer curbside collection for oversized items like mattresses. Here is the general pattern:

• Curbside large-item collection: Some regions (Toronto, Niagara, some Durham communities) offer scheduled curbside pickup for oversized items including mattresses. This typically requires advance scheduling -- you cannot simply put a mattress at the curb on recycling day and expect it to be collected. Contact your municipality to determine whether this service is offered and how to book.
• Depot drop-off: Available in virtually all regions, with the fee structures described above. This requires transporting the mattress yourself to a drop-off facility, which is not practical without a truck or van.
• Annual or seasonal events: Some municipalities offer free or reduced-fee large-item drop-off events on specific dates each year. These fill up quickly. Check your local municipal calendar in early spring when these are typically announced.
• Private removal services: Junk removal companies will collect mattresses for a fee -- typically $50-120 for a single item in Southern Ontario. This is convenient but the most expensive option.

Brantford and Brant County Options

The Simplest Option: Retailer Mattress Removal

For most Ontario households, the most practical and often most affordable way to dispose of an old mattress is to have it removed when the new mattress is delivered. This approach has several advantages:

• No need to transport a large, unwieldy mattress yourself
• No time spent navigating municipal booking systems or depot hours
• Often no additional cost over and above what you are already paying for delivery
• The retailer typically directs the old mattress to appropriate processors (recyclers or landfill as required) rather than you having to research disposal options yourself
