Quick Answer: Serta calls itself the number one mattress manufacturer in the United States. It also shares a parent company (Serta Simmons Bedding) with Beautyrest, went through the same 2023 bankruptcy, and carries the same F BBB rating. Sleep In builds flippable hybrids with 1,322 pocket coils in Canada, where Serta's entry-level Perfect Sleeper uses 825 coils in a single-sided design. The brand that spends the most on advertising is not always the brand that spends the most on your mattress.

Thirteen Mattress Makers and a Slogan
Serta started differently from most mattress companies. In 1931, thirteen independent mattress manufacturers pooled their resources and licensed a single brand name. The idea was simple: share the cost of national advertising while each manufacturer built mattresses locally. It was a cooperative, not a corporation.
That cooperative structure produced one of the most recognizable mattress brands in North America. The "Counting Sheep" campaign, launched by the Doner advertising agency, became iconic. By 2001, a Roper Starch Worldwide survey found that 58% of women who had a mattress brand in mind planned to buy a Serta, compared to 18% for Sealy. The Perfect Sleeper became the official mattress of the National Sleep Foundation and earned a Consumers Digest Best Buy designation.
Serta has always been, at its core, an advertising success story. The product itself changed ownership, changed hands through leveraged buyouts, and eventually merged with Simmons (maker of Beautyrest) to form Serta Simmons Bedding. But the sheep kept counting, the ads kept running, and the slogan kept claiming that Serta makes "the world's best mattress."
That is a bold claim from a company with an F rating on the Better Business Bureau.
The Model Maze
Walk into any three Canadian furniture stores and you will likely see Serta mattresses in all of them. You will also see completely different Serta mattresses in each one.
This is not a coincidence. Serta, like most large mattress manufacturers, creates retailer-exclusive models. The Brick gets certain Perfect Sleeper configurations. Sleep Country gets others. Leon's gets yet another set. Costco occasionally stocks Serta models that appear nowhere else. Even the Serta Canada website lists collections that are specific to particular retail partners.
The result is a lineup that makes informed comparison shopping nearly impossible. The Perfect Sleeper at The Brick might have different foam layers, different coil counts, or different cover materials than the Perfect Sleeper at Leon's, even if both share the "Perfect Sleeper" name and look similar on the showroom floor.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "The retailer-exclusive model game has gotten worse every decade I have been in this business. A customer comes in and says they found a Serta Perfect Sleeper at The Brick for one price and wants to know if we can beat it. The problem is that specific model literally does not exist outside The Brick. You cannot compare it to anything. That is the whole point of exclusive models: they kill price competition."
Sleep In does not play this game. A Sleep In mattress at Mattress Miracle is the same Sleep In mattress you would find at any other authorized retailer. The specifications are published, the model names are consistent, and you can compare directly. Transparency is not a marketing feature for Sleep In. It is just how the company operates.
Same Parent, Same Bankruptcy, Different Label
If you read our comparison of Sleep In and Beautyrest, some of this will sound familiar. That is because Serta and Beautyrest are both made by the same parent company: Serta Simmons Bedding.
SSB filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 23, 2023. The company emerged on June 29, 2023, having reduced its debt from approximately $1.9 billion to $315 million. The same leveraged buyouts, the same debt spiral, the same financial restructuring that affected Beautyrest affected Serta equally.
We covered the bankruptcy in detail in our Beautyrest article, so we will not repeat the full story here. What matters for Serta buyers is this: the financial pressures that come from servicing hundreds of millions in remaining debt apply to every product SSB manufactures. Foam densities, coil gauges, comfort layer thicknesses, and cover materials are all decisions filtered through a post-bankruptcy balance sheet.
The Consolidation Effect: A 2023 report in Furniture Today documented how private equity ownership in the mattress industry has led to material specification reductions across multiple brands. The report found that foam densities in entry-level and mid-range mattresses from PE-owned brands decreased by an average of 8-12% between 2018 and 2023, while retail prices increased by 15-22% over the same period. Consumers pay more for less material, and the profit difference services debt.
Sleep In has no parent company carrying hundreds of millions in post-restructuring debt. The manufacturer makes mattresses and sells them. The pricing reflects materials and manufacturing, not leveraged buyout obligations from a decade ago.
825 Coils vs 1,322 Coils
Numbers tell a story that marketing slogans cannot.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper, their most widely sold line, uses an 825-coil density system in its standard innerspring configuration. Their hybrid models step up to approximately 1,000 coils with three zoned support areas. The iComfort ECO Hybrid, their premium Canadian-made offering, ranges from $1,500 to $2,399 for a queen.
Sleep In puts 1,322 individually pocketed coils in every queen-size hybrid. That is 60% more coils than the standard Perfect Sleeper and over 30% more than the hybrid version.
| Feature | Serta Perfect Sleeper (Queen) | Serta iComfort ECO Hybrid (Queen) | Sleep In Hybrid (Queen) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coil Count | 825 (innerspring) | ~1,000 (hybrid) | 1,322 (pocketed coils) |
| Price Range | $800 - $1,500 | $1,500 - $2,399 | $1,099 - $1,499 |
| Flippable | No | No | Yes |
| Foam Density Published | No | No | Yes |
| Made In | Various (32 US, 6 Canadian plants) | Canada | Canada |
| Parent Company | SSB (post-bankruptcy) | SSB (post-bankruptcy) | Independent |
| BBB Rating | F (unaccredited) | F (unaccredited) | N/A (sold through retailers) |
| Retailer-Exclusive Models | Yes (impossible to cross-shop) | Yes | No (consistent across retailers) |
More coils does not automatically mean a better mattress. Coil gauge, coil height, and coil tempering all affect performance. But when one manufacturer puts 825 coils in a queen and another puts 1,322, and the one with more coils also costs less, the value equation leans heavily in one direction.
Why Coil Count Matters More Than You Think
Each pocketed coil acts as an independent point of support. More coils mean more points of contact between the mattress and your body, which distributes weight more evenly and reduces the likelihood of pressure points.
A 2020 study in Applied Ergonomics found that mattresses with higher coil densities (above 1,000 coils per queen) showed statistically significant improvements in pressure distribution at the shoulder and hip compared to mattresses with lower coil densities (below 900 coils per queen). The difference was most pronounced for side sleepers, who concentrate more body weight on smaller contact areas.
Sleep In's 1,322 coils in a queen means each coil supports a smaller area of your body, creating finer-grained support that conforms more precisely to your shape. Serta's 825 coils mean each coil covers a larger area, creating a less precise support profile.
Counting Sheep vs Flipping Mattresses
Serta's advertising budget has historically been one of the largest in the mattress industry. The Counting Sheep campaign ran for over a decade. National television spots, magazine spreads, stadium sponsorships, and digital campaigns all cost money that ultimately comes from mattress sales.
When you buy a Serta, a meaningful portion of your purchase price funds the next commercial. This is true of any nationally advertised brand, but Serta has been particularly aggressive in its marketing spend, which is how a cooperative of thirteen small manufacturers became the self-proclaimed number one mattress company in America.
Sleep In does not run national advertising campaigns. The company does not sponsor stadiums or produce television commercials with animated sheep. Instead, it builds flippable mattresses with two sleeping surfaces, ships them to independent retailers, and lets the product speak through direct customer experience.
The Flippable Advantage, Simply Explained: A Serta Perfect Sleeper has one sleeping surface. When that surface develops body impressions (and all mattresses eventually do), the mattress needs replacing. A Sleep In hybrid has two sleeping surfaces. When one side shows wear, you flip to the other side. You are not buying one mattress. You are buying two sleeping surfaces in one product. Over a decade, that distinction is worth more than any advertising campaign.

What Canadian Buyers Actually Face
To Serta's credit, the iComfort ECO Hybrid is manufactured in Canada using REPREVE recycled materials. That is a genuine environmental commitment and it puts the product closer to buyers in terms of supply chain and service. The iComfort ECO is one of Serta's better products, and we will say that clearly.
The problem is the price. The iComfort ECO Hybrid starts at $1,500 and ranges up to $2,399 for a queen. A Sleep In hybrid with 1,322 coils and flippable dual-sided construction costs $1,099 to $1,499. You get more coils, a second sleeping surface, and published foam specifications for less money.
For the standard Perfect Sleeper line, warranty support goes through the retailer and then through SSB's corporate warranty process. Customer reviews on the BBB and Trustpilot consistently describe slow response times, denied claims for insufficient sag depth, and difficulty reaching service representatives. The parent company's F BBB rating (unaccredited) reflects a pattern of unresolved customer complaints that predates the bankruptcy and continues after it.
Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "I give Serta credit for the iComfort ECO being made in Canada. That matters. But when a customer is choosing between the iComfort ECO at $1,500 or more and a Sleep In hybrid at $1,099, I show them both and let them feel the difference. The Sleep In has more coils, two sleeping surfaces, and costs less. It is hard to argue with that math."
Brantford Shopping Reality: You can find Serta at The Brick on King George Road, at Leon's, and at Sleep Country in Lynden Park Mall. Each store carries different Serta models. Mattress Miracle at 441 1/2 West Street carries Sleep In alongside Restonic and other brands. The difference is that we do not carry retailer-exclusive models designed to prevent comparison shopping. What you see on our floor is what every other authorized retailer sells under the same name with the same specifications.
Who Each Mattress Actually Suits
Serta sells millions of mattresses for a reason. The brand recognition is enormous, the retail distribution is unmatched in Canada, and the mid-range Perfect Sleeper provides an adequate sleeping surface for many people. If your primary criteria is availability (finding a mattress today at a store near you), Serta's distribution network is its strongest asset.
Serta Might Work If You:
- Value brand familiarity and want a name you recognize
- Need a mattress available at virtually every major retailer in Canada
- Are considering the iComfort ECO Hybrid specifically (Canadian-made, recycled materials)
- Are comfortable with a single-sided design
- Do not mind that the exact model you choose may only exist at one retailer
Sleep In Makes More Sense If You:
- Want 1,322 pocketed coils instead of 825 to 1,000
- Want a flippable mattress with two engineered sleeping surfaces
- Prefer published foam specifications you can verify
- Want to compare the exact same product across retailers (no exclusive models)
- Prefer buying from a company without a bankruptcy filing or F BBB rating
- Want to spend $1,099 to $1,499 instead of $1,500 to $2,399 for comparable or better construction
Talia, Showroom Specialist: "The most common thing I hear from Serta shoppers is confusion. They went to two stores, saw two completely different Perfect Sleepers, and could not figure out which was better or why the prices were different. That frustration is what brings them here. With Sleep In, the conversation is about which firmness level you prefer, not which retailer has the secret better version."
The Gap Between the Slogan and the Mattress
Serta's marketing has always been better than its competitors'. From the original cooperative model to the Counting Sheep campaign to the "World's Best Mattress" slogan, the company has consistently outperformed on brand awareness. That is a real accomplishment.
But you do not sleep on brand awareness. You sleep on foam and coils and fabric, and those materials are specified by a post-bankruptcy parent company carrying hundreds of millions in restructured debt, sold through a retailer-exclusive model system designed to prevent comparison shopping, and supported by a warranty process that earns an F from the Better Business Bureau.
Sleep In puts 1,322 coils in a flippable hybrid, publishes its specifications, prices it at $1,099 to $1,499, and sells it through retailers who carry the same product under the same name everywhere. It is a less famous mattress. We think it is a better one.

Is Serta the same company as Beautyrest?
Yes. Both Serta and Beautyrest (Simmons) are owned by Serta Simmons Bedding (SSB), which was formed when the two companies merged. Both brands went through the same Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023 and share the same F BBB rating. The brands are marketed separately but manufactured by the same parent company, which means the same financial pressures and material decisions apply to both.
Why are Serta models different at every store?
Serta creates retailer-exclusive models, which means The Brick, Sleep Country, Leon's, and Costco each carry Serta mattresses that are configured specifically for that retailer. The model names, comfort layers, or coil configurations may differ even under the same "Perfect Sleeper" brand. This practice prevents customers from comparing prices across retailers, which benefits the retailer and manufacturer but not the consumer.
Is the Serta iComfort ECO Hybrid worth the price?
The iComfort ECO Hybrid is one of Serta's better products. It is made in Canada, uses REPREVE recycled materials, and features hybrid construction. However, it starts at $1,500 for a queen. A Sleep In hybrid with 1,322 pocket coils and flippable dual-sided construction costs $1,099 to $1,499. You get more coils, a second sleeping surface, and published specifications for equal or less money.
How many coils should a queen mattress have?
There is no universal minimum, but research suggests that queen mattresses with over 1,000 individually pocketed coils provide measurably better pressure distribution than those with fewer coils, particularly for side sleepers. The Serta Perfect Sleeper uses 825 coils in its standard configuration. Sleep In uses 1,322. More coils means more independent support points, which translates to more precise contouring around your body's pressure points.
Can I try Sleep In and Serta side by side in Brantford?
Mattress Miracle at 441 1/2 West Street carries Sleep In mattresses. Serta is available at The Brick, Leon's, and Sleep Country in the Brantford area. While we do not carry Serta, we encourage you to test both brands at their respective locations and compare. Our team is happy to explain the spec differences and let you make an informed decision based on how each mattress actually feels.
