Quick Answer: When people say "snoring machine," they usually mean one of two things: a CPAP machine (medical device to stop snoring/apnea) or a White Noise Machine (to mask the sound for the partner). If you stop breathing, you need a CPAP. If you just need to drown out the noise, a white noise machine or fan can save your partner's sleep.

In our store, customers often come in asking for a "machine to stop snoring." It is a confusing term.
Usually, the snorer wants a machine to fix their throat. The partner wants a machine to drown out the noise. These are very different devices.
At Mattress Miracle, we don't sell medical equipment, but we help many couples navigate the "sleep divorce" caused by noise. Here is the breakdown of the hardware available.
The Medical vs. The Band-Aid
1. The CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure):
This is a medical device prescribed by a doctor. It blows a stream of air into your throat through a mask to keep your airway open. It stops the snoring because it stops the tissue from collapsing. It is the gold standard for Sleep Apnea.
2. The White Noise Machine:
This is a speaker that plays static, rain, or fan sounds. It does not stop the snoring. It simply fills the room with a consistent sound frequency that "masks" the sudden spikes of noise (the snore), making it less jarring for the partner. It is a band-aid, but a very effective one.
How to Mask the Sound of Snoring
If the snoring is mild (no gasping/apnea), a white noise machine can save a marriage.
Why it works: Your brain wakes up to sudden changes in sound, not sound itself. If a room is dead silent, a snore sounds like a gunshot. If the room has a constant hum of a fan (white noise), the snore blends in.
The Best Type: Look for a machine that produces "Brown Noise" (lower, deeper rumble) or a mechanical fan (like the Dohm). High-pitched white noise can be annoying. A fan is often the cheapest and most effective option.
The Only Machine That Cures It
If the snorer stops breathing, gasps, or chokes, no amount of white noise will make it safe. They need a CPAP.
Many people fear CPAP because they think it's loud. Modern machines are whisper-quiet (quieter than the snoring!). The struggle is usually the mask comfort.
Mattress Tip for CPAP Users
If you use a CPAP, you need a specific pillow. A standard pillow will push the mask off your face when you sleep on your side, causing leaks. We carry CPAP-friendly pillows with cut-outs to accommodate the hose.
The "Silent" Third Option
If you don't want a mask (CPAP) and you don't want noise (fan), there is a third machine: The Adjustable Bed.
An adjustable base is a machine that moves your body. By pressing the "Anti-Snore" button, the motor lifts the head of the bed 15 degrees. This uses gravity to open the airway.
- No Mask: Nothing on your face.
- No Noise: The bed is silent once moved.
- High Success: For non-apnea snoring, elevation is often 100% effective.
It is the most elegant mechanical solution because it addresses the root cause (gravity collapsing the throat) without medicalizing your bedroom.

Call 519-770-0001Do "smart snoring devices" work?
Devices like the Smart Nora listen for snoring and then inflate a pad under your pillow to gently move your head. They work well for some, but the mechanical sound of the pump inflating can sometimes wake the partner up.
Are humidifiers good for snoring?
Yes. Dry air causes nasal congestion, which leads to mouth breathing and snoring. A humidifier is a "snoring machine" in the sense that it conditions the air to prevent the noise.
Can earplugs block snoring?
Standard foam earplugs block about 30 decibels. A loud snore can be 60-80 decibels. They help, but you will still hear the vibration. White noise is usually more effective than earplugs alone.
Does oxygen help snoring?
Oxygen concentrators are for people with low blood oxygen (like COPD). They do not stop the mechanical blockage of snoring. You need pressure (CPAP) or elevation (adjustable bed) to open the airway.
