The mattress industry in Ontario uses three delivery tiers, but retailers do not always make the distinctions clear. Understanding what each tier actually means prevents unpleasant surprises on delivery day.

Tier 1: Curbside Delivery

The delivery truck pulls up. The driver places the mattress (usually in a box or plastic wrap) at your curb, driveway, or building entrance. The driver leaves. You carry the mattress inside, up the stairs, into the bedroom, and set it up yourself.

This is the default for most online mattress retailers in Canada. When a website says "free delivery," they almost always mean curbside. A queen mattress weighs 25 to 45 kilograms and is roughly 152 cm by 203 cm. Getting it up a standard Canadian staircase (86 cm minimum width per the National Building Code) is a two-person job that involves significant manoeuvring.

Tier 2: Threshold Delivery

The driver brings the mattress to your front door or into the lobby of your apartment building. They will not enter your home or go up stairs. You handle everything from the front door inward.

Some retailers call this "in-home delivery," which is misleading because the driver does not actually enter your home in many cases. The distinction between curbside and threshold can feel meaningless if you live in a house with an accessible front door, but it matters significantly if you live in an apartment building where getting past the lobby is the hard part.

Tier 3: White Glove Delivery

This is the full service. The delivery team enters your home, carries the mattress and foundation to the specific room you designate, sets it up on your bed frame, removes all packaging, and typically removes your old mattress and box spring. Some white glove services also include bed frame assembly, adjustable base setup, and floor protection.

White glove is the standard that delivery should be, not the premium upgrade it has been marketed as. For most of the mattress industry's history, this is simply how mattresses were delivered. The introduction of mattress-in-a-box and online retail created the cheaper tiers, and "white glove" became the term for what used to be normal service.

What Real White Glove Delivery Actually Includes

The phrase "white glove" is used loosely in Ontario, and not every retailer means the same thing. Here is what genuine white glove mattress delivery should include.

Room of choice placement. The team carries the mattress to your bedroom, regardless of floor level. Second floor, third floor, basement suite. This is the core promise of white glove service.

Full setup. The mattress is placed on your existing bed frame, foundation, or platform. If you purchased a new foundation, the team sets that up first, then positions the mattress. If you purchased an adjustable base, they assemble it, test the motor and remote, and place the mattress.

Packaging removal. All plastic wrap, cardboard, corner protectors, and packaging tape are removed and taken away. Your bedroom is left clean.

Old mattress and box spring removal. The team takes your old mattress and box spring away. This is the service that saves you the most hassle, because disposing of an old mattress in Ontario involves figuring out municipal pickup schedules, paying landfill fees, or hiring a junk removal service.

Floor and wall protection. Quality white glove teams use shoe covers and blanket pads to protect floors, doorframes, and walls during delivery. This seems like a small detail until you see the scuff marks a mattress corner leaves on a freshly painted hallway wall.

Bed frame assembly (when included). If you purchased a bed frame or adjustable base, some white glove services include assembly. This varies by retailer, and some charge extra for frame assembly even when the mattress delivery is white glove. Always ask.

Here is a straightforward comparison of what major Ontario mattress retailers include in their delivery services. These details change periodically, so confirm with the retailer before purchasing, but this reflects the current landscape.

A few things stand out in this comparison. The chain retailers (Sleep Country, The Brick, Leon's) generally offer white glove for in-store purchases, but the details vary by location and sometimes by order size. Online-only brands (Endy, Douglas) default to curbside because their business model is built around shipping compressed mattresses in boxes, and sending a two-person delivery team to every customer would change their cost structure entirely.

The gap between what chains call "included" and what you actually receive is worth investigating. Some locations subcontract delivery to third-party logistics companies whose drivers are paid per stop and incentivized to be fast, not thorough. A two-minute drop at the front door is faster than a twenty-minute room placement with shoe covers and old mattress removal. Ask whether the delivery team is employed by the retailer or subcontracted.

Why White Glove Matters More Than You Think

White glove delivery is not about luxury. It is about practicality. Here is why it matters, particularly in Ontario.

Ontario houses have stairs. Most Ontario homes are two-storey, with bedrooms upstairs. 3. Does the team use floor protection and shoe covers? This separates professional delivery from a quick drop. If the team is walking through your home with outdoor shoes and no protection, they are not treating your house with the care white glove implies.

4. Will the team assemble my bed frame or adjustable base? Mattress placement and frame assembly are often separate services. Confirm what is included so you are not left with an unassembled bed at 4 p.m. on a Saturday.

5. Is the delivery team employed by you or subcontracted? This matters for accountability. If something goes wrong (damage to walls, furniture, or the mattress itself), you want to know who is responsible and how claims are handled.

6. What is the delivery window? A 4-hour window is standard. An 8-hour window ("sometime between 8 and 4") is inconvenient. A 2-hour window with a call 30 minutes before arrival is the best experience. Ask what to expect.

7. What happens if the mattress does not fit up my stairs? This is rare but it happens, especially with king mattresses in older Ontario homes. Will the team try alternative routes? Will they reschedule? Will you be charged a delivery fee even if the mattress cannot be delivered? Know the policy.

The base needs to be levelled on your floor. And then the mattress needs to be positioned on top so it bends correctly at the articulation points.
