It is hidden between the outer cover fabric and the first comfort layer, invisible during normal use, and rarely mentioned in sales materials. That changed in recent years when widespread reports of fiberglass contamination following mattress cover removals started circulating online. Homeowners described glass fibre particles on furniture, flooring, and clothing throughout their entire house after removing a mattress cover for washing.
At Mattress Miracle, this is one of the questions we get most from customers who have done their research. They want to know what is inside the cover before they commit. Here is what you actually need to know.
Why Mattresses Need Fire Barriers
Both Canada and the United States require mattresses to meet open-flame resistance standards. In Canada, the relevant regulation is Health Canada's Mattresses and Mattress Pads regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA), Schedule 1. The standard requires that a mattress not ignite when exposed to a small open flame from a specific test apparatus (simulating a cigarette lighter or match).
This standard exists because mattresses are among the most dangerous items in a home fire. A mattress burning in a bedroom can produce toxic gases and overwhelming heat within minutes. The fire barrier buys time: it does not make a mattress fireproof, but it slows the flame spread enough to allow evacuation.
The Canadian Flammability Standard
Health Canada's Schedule 1 open-flame test involves exposing the mattress surface to a calibrated gas flame (4 cm high, 600°C range) for 17 seconds at 9 specific locations. The mattress passes if it does not sustain combustion beyond 2 minutes after the flame is removed and the char length does not exceed 7 cm. This is less stringent than the U.S. 16 CFR Part 1633 standard, which tests for resistance to a propane torch and has driven widespread adoption of fire-barrier sock technology in American-made mattresses.
Manufacturers meet these standards in several ways. The most common approaches for consumer mattresses in Canada are: treated cover fabrics (using barrier fibres woven into the ticking), fire-resistant inner socks (a separate layer beneath the outer cover), and fiberglass mats. The choice of fire-barrier method significantly affects both performance and safety.
What FR Rayon Is and How It Works
FR rayon is rayon (a semi-synthetic cellulose fibre) that has been chemically treated or manufactured with flame-resistant additives. The two main types used in mattress covers are:
- Silica-based FR rayon: Rayon fibres that incorporate silica (essentially sand) during the manufacturing process. The silica does not burn and acts as a thermal barrier when exposed to flame. This is the approach used by many Canadian mattress manufacturers and is the type typically referred to as "FR rayon" in product specifications.
- Modacrylic blends: Modacrylic is an inherently flame-resistant synthetic fibre that self-extinguishes. It is often blended with cotton, wool, or rayon to create a fire-barrier fabric that feels soft and does not require chemical treatment. Wool is also naturally flame-resistant and is used in premium mattresses including some in our Restonic collections.
FR Rayon in Practice: What It Feels Like
FR rayon fire-barrier socks are typically a loose knit or non-woven fabric layer that you would never notice during normal sleep. The outer cover fabric sits on top of it. When a flame is applied to the mattress surface, the FR rayon chars rather than melting or catching, creating a carbonised layer that is self-limiting. Unlike fiberglass, this char is stable and does not release fibres into the air. If a mattress cover with an FR rayon inner sock is removed for inspection, no hazardous particles are released.

The Fiberglass Problem: What Can Go Wrong
Fiberglass fire barriers in mattresses are thin mats of glass wool or woven glass fibres, usually positioned as a sock around the foam core just inside the outer cover. Fiberglass is an effective fire barrier: it does not burn, it conducts heat poorly, and it holds its structure under flame exposure. The problem is not fire performance; it is what happens when the cover is disturbed.
Glass fibres are brittle. Unlike FR rayon, which is flexible, glass fibres fracture when bent repeatedly. In a mattress being slept on every night, the glass-fibre mat is flexed thousands of times per year. Over time, this can cause fibres to migrate through the outer cover weave, particularly if the cover fabric is not tightly woven. The fibres are microscopic (3-20 microns in diameter), and they are invisible to the naked eye.
The more immediate risk is during cover removal. Many fiberglass-lined mattresses sold online include warnings not to remove or unzip the cover. When these warnings are ignored (and they are, regularly, by consumers who want to clean the cover or inspect the mattress), the sudden exposure releases accumulated glass fibres into the air and onto surrounding surfaces. The fibres can travel through HVAC systems and spread through an entire home.
Health Effects of Fiberglass Exposure
Fiberglass fibres longer than roughly 5 microns in diameter are too large to penetrate deep into the lungs and are generally considered a nuisance irritant rather than a carcinogen at residential exposure levels. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies glass wool fibres as Group 3 (not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans) based on current evidence. However, skin and eye irritation from fiberglass exposure is well-documented and can be significant. In homes with contamination following cover removal, remediation often requires professional cleaning and can take weeks. Children and pets are at higher exposure risk than adults due to time spent on floors.
How to Tell Which Fire Barrier Is in Your Mattress
There is no standardised labelling requirement that forces manufacturers to disclose which fire-barrier method they use. However, several approaches help you find out before you buy:
- Check the law label. The law label (the tag sewn to the mattress) lists materials by percentage. If fiberglass, glass wool, or glass fibres appear in the material list, the mattress uses a fiberglass fire barrier.
- Check the cover care label. Many fiberglass-lined mattresses include a warning: "Do not remove cover" or "Cover is not washable." This is a strong indicator of fiberglass inside. FR rayon covers are usually washable and do not carry this warning.
- Ask the retailer. A knowledgeable salesperson should know the fire-barrier construction of every mattress they sell. If they cannot answer, that is useful information about their product knowledge.
- Search the brand's FAQ. After the fiberglass contamination stories became public, many brands added explicit statements to their websites clarifying whether their mattresses contain fiberglass. Those that do not contain it say so prominently. Those that do are less forthcoming.
- Check country of origin. Fiberglass fire barriers became widespread in budget mattresses because they are cheap and meet U.S. flammability standards easily. Canadian-made mattresses are more likely to use wool, modacrylic blends, or FR rayon because Canadian manufacturers have traditionally favoured these materials. Imported budget mattresses (particularly those sold online) are more likely to use fiberglass.

Canadian vs. U.S. Flammability Requirements
Understanding why fiberglass became so prevalent requires understanding the U.S. regulatory context. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rule 16 CFR Part 1633, effective 2007, requires mattresses to withstand a full propane torch test lasting 70 seconds. This is a significantly more demanding test than Canada's open-flame schedule. Meeting 1633 drove widespread use of fire-barrier socks, and the cheapest option for budget manufacturers was fiberglass.
Canada's CCPSA Schedule 1 test is less aggressive, which means Canadian manufacturers can meet the standard using wool batting, modacrylic covers, or FR rayon without the same engineering pressure that pushed American manufacturers toward fiberglass. This is one reason Canadian-made mattresses tend to have more natural or less controversial fire-barrier solutions.
However, many mattresses sold in Canada are manufactured in or for the U.S. market and may include fiberglass fire barriers designed to meet 16 CFR Part 1633. The Canadian standard does not prohibit fiberglass; it simply does not require the level of flame resistance that made fiberglass so common in the U.S.
Other Fire-Barrier Approaches Worth Knowing
Beyond FR rayon and fiberglass, mattresses use several other fire-barrier approaches:
Fire-Barrier Methods Used in Canadian Mattresses
- Wool: Naturally flame-resistant due to high moisture content and protein structure. Chars rather than melting. Used in premium mattresses including our Restonic Luxury Silk and Wool. No synthetic additives required.
- Modacrylic blends: Inherently flame-resistant synthetic fibre. Often blended with cotton or rayon. Soft, comfortable, safe if cover is removed. Common in mid-range Canadian mattresses.
- FR rayon (silica-based): Treated rayon with embedded silica. Safe for cover removal. Common in North American mid-range hybrids.
- Chemical treatments on cover fabric: Antimony-based or borate-based flame retardants applied to the outer ticking. Generally less preferred than physical barrier materials because of chemical off-gassing concerns. Rare in current Canadian production.
- Fiberglass: Glass-wool or woven glass fibre mat. Effective fire barrier but risks fibre migration during normal use and hazardous contamination if cover is disturbed. Predominantly in budget online-only brands.

Can I wash a mattress cover that has an FR rayon fire barrier?

Most FR rayon-lined covers can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and air dried. Avoid high heat, which can degrade the rayon fibres over many wash cycles.
How do I know if my current mattress has fiberglass?
