Can a pillow really cause migraines?
A pillow alone does not cause migraines in the neurological sense. However, a pillow that misaligns your cervical spine can trigger cervicogenic headaches (which mimic migraines) and can lower the threshold for migraine attacks in people who are susceptible. Cervical dysfunction is an increasingly recognized migraine trigger, and proper pillow support addresses that trigger directly.
How long does it take for a new pillow to help with headaches?
Most people notice a difference within one to two weeks of switching to a properly fitted pillow. There may be an adjustment period of three to five days where your neck muscles adapt to the new alignment. If headaches persist after three weeks with the correct pillow height and material for your sleep position, other factors are likely contributing, and you should consult your doctor.
Is memory foam or latex better for headaches?
Research gives latex a slight edge. The Gordon et al. (2009) study found latex pillows most effective for reducing waking headaches. However, memory foam, particularly contoured memory foam, also performs well. The most important factor is correct loft for your sleep position, not the specific material. Both latex and memory foam outperform down, feather, and polyester fills for cervical support.
Should I use one pillow or two for headache prevention?
One pillow of the correct loft is almost always better than stacking two pillows. Two pillows create inconsistent height, shift during the night, and often push your head too high, causing forward head posture that strains the suboccipital muscles. If one pillow is not tall enough, replace it with a single pillow of proper height rather than stacking.
