Why Your Pillow Matters More Than You Think
Most people spend significant time choosing a mattress and almost no time on their pillow. It's a mistake. The pillow is where your head spends 7–8 hours a night. A pillow that's the wrong loft or support level for your sleep position keeps your neck out of alignment all night, the cumulative effect is neck pain, shoulder tension, and disrupted sleep.
The pillow and mattress work as a system. A firm mattress absorbs less shoulder depth, so side sleepers on a firm mattress typically need higher-loft pillows than they would on a softer surface. When customers at our Brantford showroom come in asking about neck pain, we always ask about both the mattress and the pillow, it's rarely just one or the other.
Choosing a Pillow by Sleep Position
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers need the most pillow support. The gap between the mattress surface and the side of the head, filled by the shoulder, is typically 10–15 cm. A pillow that compresses too much leaves the neck dropping down toward the mattress. A pillow that's too thick pushes the head up, creating a lateral neck bend in the opposite direction.
Best fills for side sleepers: latex (consistent support, doesn't compress), memory foam (conforms to neck shape), firm down alternative (supportive without the heat retention of memory foam).
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need medium loft, enough to maintain the natural cervical curve but not so thick that the chin is pushed toward the chest. A contoured memory foam pillow (with the cervical roll at the neck edge) works particularly well here. Standard pillow height of 8–12 cm compressed is typically right for most back sleepers.
What doesn't work for back sleepers: very high loft pillows that push the head forward, or completely flat pillows that let the head fall back without neck support. See our back sleeping guide for position-specific recommendations.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleeping is hard on the neck regardless of pillow choice, the neck is rotated to one side all night. If you stomach sleep and can't break the habit, use the thinnest pillow possible, or no pillow under the head at all, with a thin pillow under the abdomen to reduce lower back strain. Our stomach sleeping guide covers the full picture.
Pillow Fill Types Compared
Memory Foam
Memory foam pillows offer consistent support that doesn't compress over the night. They come in solid (one piece) and shredded (adjustable fill) versions. Solid memory foam is often too stiff for many sleepers. Shredded memory foam allows height and firmness adjustment. Main downside: heat retention. Memory foam sleeps noticeably warmer than down or latex.
Down and Down Alternative
Natural down pillows are soft, breathable, and adjustable by feel, you can bunch or flatten them. The downside is compression: a down pillow compressed by the weight of a side sleeper's head provides minimal support after the first hour. High fill-power down (700+ fill power) retains loft better but is significantly more expensive. Down alternative (polyester fill) is a more affordable option but compresses faster.
Latex
Latex pillows are responsive and supportive, they compress under weight and spring back, providing consistent support throughout the night. They sleep cooler than memory foam. Shredded latex allows height adjustment. Natural latex is a good choice for people who want non-synthetic fill. Main downside: weight and cost.
Buckwheat
Buckwheat hull pillows are adjustable, supportive, and cool, the hulls allow airflow. They're firm and hold their shape well. The noise (buckwheat hulls shift when you move) is an adjustment, though most sleepers habituate to it. Popular in Japanese sleep culture, and increasingly available in Canada through specialty retailers.
Hybrid
Many mid-range and premium pillows use hybrid constructions, a memory foam or latex core for support with a down or down alternative outer layer for feel. Often a good compromise for sleepers who want support without the stiff feel of solid memory foam.
Understanding Pillow Loft
Pillow loft refers to the height of the pillow when it's lying flat, uncompressed. High-loft pillows are typically 12 cm or more. Low-loft pillows are under 8 cm. Medium loft is 8–12 cm.
- Side sleepers: High loft (12–15 cm), need to fill the shoulder gap
- Back sleepers: Medium loft (8–12 cm), support neck curve without pushing chin forward
- Stomach sleepers: Low loft (under 8 cm) or no pillow, minimize neck rotation
- Combination sleepers: Medium loft with adjustable fill, allows repositioning
Your mattress firmness also affects ideal pillow loft. A softer mattress allows the shoulder to sink in, reducing the distance to fill, side sleepers on a soft mattress often need a lower-loft pillow than on a firm surface. If you've recently changed your mattress and your neck started bothering you, the pillow may need to be adjusted too.
When to Replace Your Pillow
The fold test is the simplest guide: fold the pillow in half and release. If it springs back to its original shape, it still has life. If it stays folded, it's done.
General replacement timelines by fill type:
- Down and down alternative: 1–2 years with regular use
- Memory foam (solid): 2–3 years
- Memory foam (shredded): 1.5–2.5 years (fill can be supplemented)
- Latex: 3–4 years
- Buckwheat: 3+ years (hulls can be refreshed)
Washing frequency matters. Pillow protectors extend lifespan significantly. Washing without a protector and without following care instructions accelerates breakdown of the fill material.

Call 519-770-0001What type of pillow is best for side sleepers?
Side sleepers need a firm, high-loft pillow, typically 12–15 cm, to fill the space between the shoulder and the side of the head. Memory foam, latex, and firm down-alternative fills work well. Avoid soft down that compresses under head weight. See our detailed side sleeper pillow guide for specific recommendations.
How often should you replace a pillow?
Most pillows need replacing every 1–2 years. Do the fold test: fold in half and release, if it stays folded, replace it. Memory foam and latex last longer, typically 2–4 years, but still degrade with use and should be replaced when they no longer hold their shape consistently.
What pillow is best for back sleepers?
Back sleepers need medium loft (8–12 cm) with neck support. Contoured memory foam pillows work well, the cervical roll supports the neck curve while the head rests in the recessed centre. Avoid very high pillows that push the chin toward the chest, or very flat pillows that provide no neck support.

Come in and feel the difference between fill types in person. We'll ask about your sleep position and current mattress so the recommendation actually makes sense for you.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "The most common pillow mistake is people buying based on how it feels in their hand at the store, soft and fluffy feels nice to touch. But a side sleeper needs a pillow that stays supportive under 8 hours of head weight, not one that collapses in the first hour. We always ask how you sleep before we make a pillow recommendation."
