Restonit Cloud Vapor Copper Gel Mattress Review: Antimicrobial Cooling at $1,400

Copper in a mattress sounds like marketing. We were sceptical when Restonit first showed us the Cloud Vapor. Another mattress with a fancy material claim, another reason to charge more money.

Then we looked at the research. Copper's antimicrobial properties are not new or controversial. Hospitals have been installing copper surfaces for years to reduce infection rates. The EPA registered copper as an antimicrobial surface material back in 2008. And Health Canada recognizes copper's antibacterial claims under specific conditions.

The question is not whether copper works as an antimicrobial agent. It does. The question is whether copper-infused mattress foam delivers a meaningful benefit at the price. After selling the Cloud Vapor in our Brantford showroom and shipping it across the country, here is our honest assessment.

What Copper Actually Does in a Mattress

Two things. Both are backed by peer-reviewed research, not marketing copy.

Antimicrobial Action

Copper ions disrupt bacterial cell membranes on contact. A study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology demonstrated that copper surfaces reduced viable bacteria by 99.9% within two hours. The EPA has registered over 400 copper alloys as antimicrobial materials.

In a mattress, copper particles infused into the foam create an inhospitable environment for bacteria, mould, and fungi that naturally accumulate in any sleep surface over time. You shed skin cells, perspire, and transfer body oils to your mattress every night. These organic materials are food for microorganisms. Copper inhibits their growth within the foam itself.

Thermal Conductivity

Copper is one of the most thermally conductive metals. In foam, copper particles act as heat conductors, pulling warmth away from your body and distributing it through the mattress rather than letting it pool under your shoulders and hips. This is a different cooling mechanism than gel (which absorbs heat) or coil airflow (which ventilates heat). Copper moves heat laterally through the foam matrix.

The practical effect: the Cloud Vapor sleeps cooler than the Borealis Gel and comparably to the FROST, though through a different mechanism. The FROST feels cool to the initial touch. The Cloud Vapor manages heat more gradually, preventing the slow buildup that wakes hot sleepers at 3 a.m.

How the Cloud Vapor Sleeps

First Impression

The surface does not feel dramatically different from a standard gel foam mattress at first touch. Unlike the FROST, which has a noticeable cool-to-the-touch sensation, the Cloud Vapor's cooling is more subtle and progressive. You notice it 10 to 15 minutes into lying down, when a standard foam mattress would be warming up and the Cloud Vapor is not.

Comfort Profile

Medium firmness (5.5 out of 10). Classic memory foam contouring with the slow response that memory foam is known for. Side sleepers get excellent pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers get solid lumbar support. Stomach sleepers may find it slightly soft, similar to our assessment of the FROST.

Motion Isolation

Excellent. All-foam construction absorbs movement. Couples benefit from both the motion isolation and the antimicrobial properties, since two people generate more heat and more organic material than one.

Odour

This is worth mentioning specifically. Some copper-infused mattresses have a faint metallic smell during the off-gassing period. The Cloud Vapor's off-gassing is mild, similar to the Borealis Gel. The metallic note is barely perceptible and gone within 48 hours. We mention it because a few online reviews of other copper mattresses flag it, and we want to set accurate expectations.

Who Benefits Most from Copper Gel

Strong Benefit

Allergy-prone sleepers. Dust mites, mould spores, and bacteria are common mattress allergens. Copper inhibits bacterial and fungal growth within the foam, reducing one source of allergens. This does not replace a mattress protector for dust mite barrier protection, but it adds an internal defence that standard foam lacks.

Hot sleepers who also want hygiene. If cooling and antimicrobial properties both matter to you, the Cloud Vapor addresses both in one product. The FROST is colder, but it does not have antimicrobial copper.

Humid climates and basements. Mattresses in humid environments are more prone to mould and mildew. Copper infusion provides ongoing protection that is especially valuable in basement bedrooms, lake houses, or homes without central air conditioning. In Canadian climates, summer humidity in Ontario and the Maritimes can be surprisingly high.

Moderate Benefit

General hygiene-conscious buyers. If you are the type of person who replaces their mattress protector regularly, washes bedding weekly, and cares about what is happening inside their mattress, the copper adds peace of mind. It is not essential for a healthy sleeper, but it provides measurable antimicrobial activity.

Minimal Benefit

Buyers who just want a comfortable mattress. If antimicrobial properties and cooling are not priorities, the Glacier Peyto at $1,045 is a better overall mattress for $355 less. It has coils for support, gel foam for comfort, and better edge support. The Cloud Vapor's value proposition is specifically about copper's dual cooling and antimicrobial benefits.

Where It Sits in the Restonit Lineup

The Cloud Vapor sits second from the top in both price and cooling. It is the only model with copper's antimicrobial benefit. If you lined up all six Restonit mattresses and asked "which one addresses the most concerns at once?" the Cloud Vapor would be the answer: it cools, it fights bacteria, and it provides solid memory foam comfort. Whether those combined benefits justify $1,400 depends on how much you value each one.

Adjustable Base and Frame Pairing

For platform bed pairing, the Cloud Vapor works on any frame with slats. A Julien Beaudoin bed frame at $1,195 to $1,350 plus the Cloud Vapor creates a $2,595 to $2,750 premium Canadian bedroom setup.

Honest Limitations

All-foam construction. Like the Borealis Gel and FROST, the Cloud Vapor is all foam. No coils for structural support. Heavier sleepers over 230 lbs will compress the foam more and may find long-term support inadequate. The Glacier Peyto hybrid is better for larger frames.

Copper claims have limits. Copper inhibits bacterial growth within the foam. It does not sterilize the mattress surface. Dust mites live on the surface, not inside the foam, so a mattress protector is still necessary for mite allergies. The copper addresses internal hygiene, not external allergens.

Price position is awkward. At $1,400, the Cloud Vapor sits $355 above the Glacier Peyto (better overall mattress) and only $125 below the FROST (colder). Its justification rests entirely on the copper antimicrobial benefit being worth that premium to you specifically.

Memory foam feel. Same caveat as every all-foam mattress: if you do not like the conforming, slow-response feel of memory foam, no amount of copper or cooling gel will change the fundamental sleep experience.
