A single bed set is a matched group of bedding cut for a single mattress, which Canadian stores also sell as "twin". Some sets cover only the sheets. What Is a Single Bed Set?
A single bed set is bedding sized for a single mattress, the narrowest standard adult bed. The Better Sleep Council, a US industry group, lists a twin (or single) mattress at about 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, and in Canada "single" and "twin" name the same mattress. So a set labelled single, twin or single/twin should fit the same bed. A set labelled twin XL is a different size and is 5 inches longer.

Retailers use three names for single bedding bundles. A sheet set holds the sheets and pillowcase. A comforter set or duvet cover set holds the top layer and its shams. A bed-in-a-bag holds both. What Comes in a Single Bedding Set
A single bedding set, built complete, has five layers from the mattress up. Count the pieces on the package before you buy, because a twin sheet set often has one pillowcase where the double and queen sets have two. A mattress protector is a thin waterproof cover that goes on first, under the fitted sheet. On a child's single bed it is the layer that matters most, since one spill can stain a mattress for good. Single duvet or comforter
A single duvet is a filled insert that lives inside a washable duvet cover. A comforter is one quilted piece with its own fabric face. Comforter Set vs Bedding Set: What Is the Difference?
A comforter set and a bedding set differ in what they leave out. A comforter set is the top of the bed only: one comforter plus matching pillow shams, and sometimes a bed skirt. It has no sheets. A bedding set, as most Canadian retailers use the term, is broader. It can mean sheets alone, a duvet cover with shams, or the full bed-in-a-bag with sheets and comforter together. Two things stand out. The Versaille fitted sheet is cut an inch wider than the 38-inch figure, which gives the elastic room to grip. And a 64-inch twin duvet cover on a 38-inch mattress hangs about 13 inches over each side, enough to cover the mattress edge on a standard frame.
Twin XL bedding for a longer single mattress
Twin XL bedding fits a mattress 5 inches longer than a standard single. A regular single fitted sheet will not stretch over a twin XL, though a twin XL sheet on a regular single just sits loose. Best Fabric for a Single Bed Set
The best fabric for a single bed set is the one that suits the room temperature and the person washing it. Microfiber is cheap, dries fast and resists wrinkles. Cotton sateen feels smooth and breathes well. Bamboo blends, like the bamboo bed sheets in our store, feel cool to the touch. For a child's bed that gets washed every week, microfiber at $30 is a sensible pick. Read the fibre label as well as the product name. The Bamboo Luxe sheets carry "bamboo" in the name, yet the listing gives the material as 100% microfiber. The Bamboo Cotton set is 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. Canada's Textile Labelling Act covers this. The Competition Bureau's guide says every fibre making up 5% or more must be named on the label with its percentage. Sheets, pillows and pillowcases must carry permanent labels. What research says about bedding fabric and sleep
A 2016 study in Nature and Science of Sleep by Shin and colleagues tested 17 healthy young adults. Each spent nine nights in a sleep lab. Swapping polyester bedding for wool bedding made no measurable difference to their sleep. Room temperature did: they slept better at 17°C than at 22°C. Wool sleepwear shortened the time to fall asleep compared with cotton. Two authors worked for the Woolmark Company, a wool industry body, and the sample was small.
A 2012 review by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology looked at heat and cold. With bedding and clothing in use, heat exposure increased wakefulness and reduced deep sleep and REM sleep. Washing is where the count comes from. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America advises washing sheets and blankets weekly in water of at least 130°F (about 54°C) to kill dust mites.
