A bed sheet size is the width and length of the mattress top a sheet is cut to cover. On a fitted sheet it also includes the pocket depth, the drop that wraps the mattress sides. Pocket depth measures how far a fitted sheet's corner seam drops down the side of the mattress before the elastic tucks under it. A fitted sheet holds best when its pocket is about 2 inches deeper than the mattress, measured with any topper and protector in place. Wayfair's bed sheet size guide puts the margin at 1 to 3 inches.
Mattress size and sheet size are two different numbers. The Better Sleep Council, a consumer site the International Sleep Products Association sponsors, gives the king mattress as 76 x 80 inches. The two king sheet sets Mattress Miracle sells that print a fitted size, Versaille and Windsor, both label it 78 x 80.

Mattress Size vs Sheet Size: Why King Sheets Say 78 x 80
A king mattress is 76 x 80 inches, and a king fitted sheet is usually labelled 78 x 80. Both numbers are right. The Better Sleep Council and Sleep In's size tables give the mattress as 76 inches wide. The Versaille 300 thread count king set lists its fitted sheet at 78 x 80 with a 17-inch drop, and the Windsor king set says 78 x 80 too.
Other makers spread across 4 inches. QE Home, a Canadian bedding retailer, lists most of its king fitted sheets at 78 x 80 and one linen line at 76 x 80. Dania's chart gives 198 cm, about 78 inches. Anne de Solène uses the bare mattress size, 76 x 80, and Wayfair's guide says 80 x 80.

What Are Queen Size Sheet Dimensions?
Queen size sheet dimensions are 60 x 80 inches (152.4 x 203.2 cm) for the fitted sheet, plus its pocket. The queen flat sheet runs about 90 x 102 to 98 x 103 inches, and the two pillowcases are usually 20 x 30. A 60 x 80 sheet is a queen, and so is a 90 x 102 flat sheet. The Better Sleep Council calls the queen today's most popular mattress size, so queen sets are the easiest to find.

Queen mattresses vary most in height. The queens we sell list heights from a 5-inch foam to a 16-inch euro top, so one queen sheet cannot fit them all. Single and Twin Sheet Sizes
Single and twin are the same size in Canada: a mattress 38 to 39 inches wide and 75 inches long, depending on the maker. Twin fitted sheets are labelled 39 x 75, so they fit either width, and twin flat sheets run from 66 x 96 inches (Anne de Solène's chart) to 74 x 100 (the Versaille twin). A twin Versaille set is $112 and comes with one pillowcase, since a single bed usually takes one pillow.
Twin sheets suit children's beds, bunk beds and narrow guest beds. They will not fit a twin XL, which is 5 inches longer. Twin XL Sheet Sizes
Twin XL sheets fit a mattress 39 inches wide by 80 inches long, the same length as a queen. QE Home's BeechBliss line labels its twin XL fitted sheet 39 x 80 and its flat sheet 68 x 105. The Better Sleep Council calls twin XL a common size in college dormitories, and two side by side make a split king adjustable bed.

Double and Full Sheet Sizes
A double sheet, called full in the United States, fits a mattress 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. The fitted sheet for a double bed is 54 x 75 inches plus its pocket on both the Windsor and Versaille sets. Double flat sheets run 81 x 96 inches (Windsor, $44.95 a set) to 89 x 100 (Versaille, $140).

King Size Sheet Dimensions
King size sheet dimensions are 78 x 80 inches for the fitted sheet on the Versaille and Windsor sets we sell, made for a 76 x 80 king mattress. King flat sheets run from 108 x 102 inches (Windsor, $59.95 a set) to 116 x 103 (Versaille, $182). In metric, the 78 x 80 fitted label is 198.12 x 203.2 cm.
King pillowcases change by maker. The French linen king case is 20 x 36 inches, the Windsor king case is 20 x 40, and the Versaille king pair is 21 x 40. California King Sheet Sizes
California king sheets fit a mattress 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. The Better Sleep Council notes it is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king, and that regular king sheets will not fit it properly. A 78-inch king fitted sheet is 6 inches too wide and 4 inches too short.
We do not stock California king sheets; the size is rare in Canada and we special-order the mattress. QE Home's Eucalyptus Luxe line lists a 72 x 84 fitted sheet with a 17-inch drop. California king beds use king pillows, so the king pillowcases we carry still work.
Fitted Sheet Pocket Depth: How Deep Should It Be?
Fitted sheet pocket depth should be about 2 inches more than the height of your mattress, topper and protector together. A 10-inch mattress wants a 12-inch pocket. Wayfair's sheet sizing guide gives the same rule as 1 to 3 inches. The Versaille listing says its 17-inch drop fits most mattresses up to about 15 inches with a protector on.

Thin mattresses have the opposite problem. Wayfair's guide suggests low-profile sheets for mattresses 8 inches or less, and a 14-inch pocket on a 5-inch bunk mattress leaves loose fabric. Add a mattress topper and the sum goes the other way. The 16-inch Lauren Euro Top with a 2-inch topper needs a 20-inch pocket, deeper than anything we stock, so call us first. Bed sheet sizes in centimetres convert with no rounding at all. Schedule II of the federal Weights and Measures Act ties the yard to the metre, and the inch it sets out comes to exactly 2.54 cm. Many charts round a queen to 152 x 203 cm; the exact figure is 152.4 x 203.2 cm.

How to Measure Your Mattress for Sheets
Measuring your mattress for sheets takes a tape and two minutes. Leave the protector on, because it adds height too.
- Measure the width and length across the top, and match them to the chart above.
- Measure the height at a corner, with any topper and protector on.
- Add 2 inches. That is the pocket depth to look for.
- Check twin (75 in long) against twin XL (80 in), and king (76 in wide) against California king (72 in).
- Check what the set includes. Some skip the flat sheet, and pillowcase sizes vary by maker.

Thread Count, Weave and Sheets for Each Season
Thread count is the number of threads in one square inch of fabric. In our experience 200 to 400 is the useful range for good cotton, and higher counts often come from twisting several thin threads together. Weave changes the feel more than the number does.

I have customers come in convinced they need 1,000-thread-count sheets, and then I show them a 300-thread-count long-staple cotton and they cannot believe how much better it feels. Quality of fibre is everything."

- Winter: flannel or a heavier sateen cotton.

Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Sizes That Go With Your Sheets
Duvet covers are cut wider than sheets so they hang over the sides. The French linen duvet cover we carry is 90 x 90 inches in queen and 104 x 90 in king. Split King and Adjustable Base Sheets
A split king uses two twin XL mattresses side by side, each with its own fitted sheet. Two 39-inch twin XLs make a surface 78 x 80 inches, so you need two twin XL fitted sheets plus a king flat sheet and duvet.
On an adjustable base, the sheet has to stay put when the head or foot lifts. Look for elastic all the way around, as on the Versaille and French linen fitted sheets, and a pocket 2 inches deeper than the mattress.
