A fitted sheet is the bottom sheet of a bed set, sewn with four corner pockets and an elastic edge so it grips the mattress. Those pockets are the whole folding problem. Once all four sit inside one another, the rest folds like a plain rectangle. Mattress Miracle is family-owned and has been in Brantford since 1997. One corner-tuck method works on all the fitted sheets and sheet sets on our floor, from 14-inch pockets to 18-inch ones.
Pocket depth is the height of a fitted sheet's corner pocket, from the top seam down to the elastic. It has to cover the mattress plus any protector or topper. A deeper pocket holds more loose fabric in each corner. That is why an 18-inch sheet folds into a thicker, lumpier bundle than a 14-inch sheet of the same size.
The steps below follow Martha Stewart's corner-tuck fold, shown on her show by crafting expert Hosanna Houser. We add the measurements, fabric notes and storage advice the videos leave out.

How Do You Fold a Fitted Sheet? The Corner-Tuck Method, Step by Step
The corner-tuck method folds a fitted sheet in seven steps. You nest the four elastic corners in one hand while standing, then finish on a bed or table. Whirlpool Canada's folding guide suggests starting with a freshly dried sheet. The steps work on any size.
Step 1: Turn the fitted sheet inside out
Turn the fitted sheet inside out so the elastic seams face you. Find the two corners on one short end. On a queen sheet like our Versaille Egyptian cotton set, that is the 60-inch side.
Step 2: Put one hand in each corner
Slip a hand into each of those two corner pockets, right up into the seam. Hold the fitted sheet up so it hangs in front of you without a twist.
Step 3: Fold the right corner over the left
Bring your right hand to your left and fold the right corner over the left one, like pulling one sock over another. Both corners now sit on your left hand, with the top one right-side out.
Step 4: Pick up the third corner
Follow the edge down to the corner hanging below the one you just moved, and fold it over the stacked pair. In Martha Stewart's version of the fold, this third corner goes on inside out.
Step 5: Tuck the fourth corner over the stack
Bring up the last corner and fold it over the other three, right-side out. All four elastic corners of the fitted sheet are now nested in one hand.
Step 6: Lay it flat and straighten the edges
Lay the folded fitted sheet on a bed or table, nested corners at the top. Fold the curved elastic edges toward the middle to make a rough rectangle. The elastic pulls the fabric out of square, so aim for straight sides and stop there.
Step 7: Fold in thirds, then to shelf size
Fold the rectangle into thirds lengthwise, flattening it between folds. Then fold the strip in thirds or quarters until it fits the shelf, drawer or bin it lives in.

Why Are Fitted Sheets So Hard to Fold?
Fitted sheets are hard to fold because each corner is a sewn, three-sided pocket and an elastic band gathers the whole edge. The deeper the pocket, the more loose fabric sits in each corner. How to Fold a Fitted Sheet on a Table or Bed
Folding a fitted sheet on a table or bed suits beginners, because the surface holds the fabric while you find the corners. Use a dining table for a twin or double and the made bed for a queen or king, sizes our Canadian bedsheet size chart lists in inches.
Table method: nest the corners on the surface
- Lay the fitted sheet inside out on the table, one short end toward you.
- Put your hands in the two near corners and fold one over the other, pocket over pocket.
- Fold the sheet in half lengthwise so the two far corners come to you.
- Tuck those two corners over the pair you're holding.
- Lay the bundle flat and fold the curved elastic edges inward to make a rectangle.
- Fold it in thirds lengthwise, then to the size you need.
No-tuck flat fold (the KonMari way)
Marie Kondo's method skips the corner tucking. KonMari's fitted sheet guide says to spread the sheet on the floor or bed with the elastic sides facing up. With the long side toward you, fold it into thirds. Then fold it in half the other way, and in half again for a linen shelf. The fold suits silky sheets that slide apart when you try to tuck the corners.
How to Finish the Fold: Thirds, Quarters, a Roll or a Folding Board
The last folds of a fitted sheet decide where it fits.
A folding board gives store-shelf edges. Matouk, the linen maker, says a queen fitted sheet needs a 10-by-13-inch board, and you can cut one from cardboard and reuse it. Maryann Pimentel, who supervises pressing and folding at Matouk and has been with the company for 25 years, recommends smoothing the creases at every fold and says ironing isn't needed if the fold is right.
Without a board, pick the finish that matches your storage:
- Linen closet shelf: fold the strip into thirds for a taller square, or quarters for a flatter rectangle. Thirds is more compact.
- Narrow shelf: fold the strip in half twice, into quarters, for a smaller but thicker packet.

How to Fold a Queen or King Fitted Sheet
A queen or king fitted sheet folds with the same corner-tuck steps as a twin, but the width makes it heavy to hold up. Do steps 1 to 5 over the bed, so the mattress takes the weight. A second person can hold two corners while you nest the pairs. WIRED sheet tester Nena Farrell folds queen sheets flat on her made bed. She finishes by folding the strip in half and in half again, and says the same fold works on a king.

Check the label before you judge a sheet by its name. Competition Bureau Canada's guide to the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations lists sheets and pillowcases among articles needing a permanent label that survives ten cleanings. How to Fold Bed Sheets as a Matching Set
To fold bed sheets as a set, fold the flat sheet and pillowcases to the same footprint as the folded fitted sheet. Then stack or bundle them.
- Fold the fitted sheet first, with the corner-tuck or flat fold, and note its finished size.
- Fold the flat sheet in half lengthwise twice, so it is about as wide as the fitted sheet bundle.
- Fold that strip in thirds or quarters until it matches the fitted sheet.
- Fold each pillowcase in half lengthwise, then in thirds, and lay them on top.
- Slide everything into the last pillowcase, or wrap the stack.

The most efficient way to store fitted sheets is as complete sets, each tucked inside its own matching pillowcase. A flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillowcases stored on separate piles get shuffled until the matching set is never where you need it.
The pillowcase method
Fold your flat sheet and fitted sheet, then tuck them both inside one matching pillowcase. The whole set stays as one tidy package. Slide it onto your linen closet shelf and you always know which set you're grabbing. No more mismatched corners on laundry day.
- Rotate your sheet sets. Take the set from the bottom of the pile so all your sheets wear evenly.
