The extra centimetre or two on each dimension allows for the seam and a comfortable fit without the case being too tight.

In Canada, some retailers label this size "regular" rather than "standard." The word change is cosmetic: the dimensions are identical. This is the size that comes with most entry-level and mid-range Canadian bedding sets, and it is the default size for single and double beds.

Queen

The queen pillowcase measures 50 x 76 cm (20 x 30 inches). It adds 10 cm (4 inches) of length compared to the standard case. This size fits queen pillows (approximately 50 x 76 cm finished) and also accommodates standard pillows with extra tuck-in length.

Many Canadian bedding sets now default to queen pillowcases rather than standard, since a queen case works for both standard and queen pillows. Euro shams are decorative accent pillows rather than sleeping pillows. They sit upright at the back of the bed during the day and are usually removed at night. Euro sham closures are typically at the back via zipper, button, or envelope flap, unlike standard sleeping pillowcases that have an open end.

Body Pillow

Euro Sham vs. European Pillowcase

Cotton shrinks approximately 3 to 5 percent in the first wash. A standard cotton pillowcase listed at 50 x 66 cm may become 48 x 63 cm after washing.
