Is 38 Inches Wide Enough for One Adult?
A 1980 Human Factors study by Mark Sanders measured 239 truck and bus drivers in three sleeping postures. It recommended a sleeper berth at least 0.84 metres (about 33 inches) wide to fit 90% of them. A twin at 96.5 cm clears that by 12.5 cm. A 2017 Nature and Science of Sleep study of 664 Danish working adults (PubMed 29138608) recorded 1.6 position shifts per hour. Those adults spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side. Bedding follows the larger number. Ten of the 11 protectors in our twin mattress protector collection list the twin at 39 x 75 inches, and the eleventh gives no measurement. A half inch either way is normal for a sewn mattress. It only matters in a built-in, an antique frame or a bunk with fixed rails, where a custom cut may be the safer buy.

Our rule of thumb on the showroom floor is a mattress about 6 inches longer than the sleeper, for the pillow and the feet. By that rule a twin fits sleepers up to about 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm), and a Twin XL up to about 6 feet 2 inches (188 cm). A 5'11" sleeper fits on a twin lying straight with 4 inches to spare, but most people that height are happier on the Twin XL mattresses we carry.

The Split King Connection
Two Twin XL mattresses side by side make 76 x 80 inches, a standard king. That is how a split king works: each sleeper gets a separate mattress, often on two adjustable bed bases that raise each side on its own. Who Should Buy a Twin Mattress?
Children (Ages 3 to 12)
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises moving a child out of the crib at 35 inches (89 cm) tall. It also says to move them once the crib rail is below three-quarters of their height. A bunk bed mattress must be thin enough that the top of the guardrail sits at least 5 inches (12.7 cm) above the top of the mattress on all sides. Bunk Bed Mattress Thickness, Step by Step
- Read the bed's label first. Health Canada says to check it for the suggested mattress size and thickness.
- No label? Measure from the slats to the top of the guardrail and subtract 5 inches (12.7 cm). A rail 13 inches above the slats leaves room for an 8-inch mattress.
- Low-profile 5 to 6-inch foam mattresses leave the most margin under the rail on the top bunk.
- The bottom bunk has no guardrail rule, so its thickness is a comfort choice. Leave enough headroom for the child to sit up.
- Health Canada also says no children under 6 on the top bunk at any time.
- Guardrails belong on all 4 sides of the top bunk, and the mattress should fit snugly against all four sides.

Many flat sheets and comforters are labelled Twin/Twin XL because the width matches. The fitted sheet is the one that differs: a twin fitted sheet on a Twin XL is 5 inches short and will not tuck under the foot.
