Quick Answer: The best travel pillow for most flyers is the Trtl Travel Pillow (C$74.99), which scored 46 of 50 in Frommer's 23-hour long-haul test. Side-leaners suit a wrap; forward nodders need chin support. A 2021 Work study of 29 people found the back of the neck among the sorest areas during three hours in a mock cabin.

A travel neck pillow is a support you wear around or beside your neck so your head stays upright while you sleep in a plane, car or train seat. Mattress Miracle is a family-owned mattress store in Brantford, Ontario, open since 1997. We do not sell airplane neck pillows, so the picks below are other makers' products, chosen from published tests. Our side of the trip is the pillow you sleep on at home.
"A travel pillow has one job: keep your neck from folding sideways when you doze upright. The memory foam wraps do that job; the two-dollar inflatable horseshoes mostly do not. Test it in a chair against a wall for ten minutes at home. If your head still slumps in your living room, it will slump at 35,000 feet."
Brad Grose, founder, Mattress Miracle, family owned in Brantford since 1997, with 40+ years in the mattress industry
Travel pillows come in four main builds. Memory foam U-shapes cushion the back and sides of the neck. Wrap pillows such as the Trtl hide a firm brace inside a fleece scarf. Inflatables pack smallest, and chin-support designs like the BCOZZY overlap under the jaw to stop the forward nod.
Direct research on travel pillows is thin, so the closest evidence comes from aircraft seats. In a 2020 Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance study, Pei and colleagues sat volunteers in an aircraft seat for two hours. Discomfort in the neck, shoulders and lower back became pronounced at about 30 minutes and kept rising to the end. The case for neck support itself comes from bed pillows. In a 1998 Swedish study by Persson and Moritz, 27 of 42 people said neck support pillows helped their neck pain.
If you are still stiff three days after landing, check the pillow you sleep on every night as well as the one you packed. Our guide to the best pillow for neck pain covers that side.
What Is the Best Neck Pillow for Travel in Canada?
The best neck pillow for travel stops your head dropping forward or sideways once you doze off in a seat. Frommer's editor Zac Thompson and a second tester flew five pillows from Boston to Ho Chi Minh City and back. That was 23 hours in the air each way, with at least six hours per pillow for each tester. In Frommer's scores out of 50, the Trtl got 46, the Ostrichpillow Go and Travelrest Nest 42 each, the Infinity Pillow 36 and the Cabeau Evolution S3 35.
| Pillow | Type | Maker's price | Frommer's score | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trtl Travel Pillow | Wrap with internal brace | C$74.99 on Trtl's Canadian store (one colour on sale at C$59.99) | 46 of 50 | Folds flat; unwrap it to switch sides |
| Ostrichpillow Go | Foam neck pillow | US$69 | 42 of 50 | Compresses up to 60 percent for packing, the maker says |
| Travelrest Nest | Memory foam | Not checked by us (Frommer's listed US$49.99) | 42 of 50 | Velcro joins the arms under the chin |
| Infinity Pillow | Fabric loop | Not checked by us (Frommer's listed US$55) | 36 of 50 | Wears many ways; the bulkiest of the five in a carry-on |
| Cabeau Evolution S3 | Memory foam U-shape | US$39.99 | 35 of 50 | Straps to the headrest; squashes to half size |
| Trtl Pillow Plus | Wrap, height-adjustable | C$99.99 on Trtl's Canadian store | Not tested | Toggles lengthen or shorten the brace |
| BCOZZY | Chin-support wrap | US$49.95 to US$56.95 (adult Large and X-Large) | Not tested | Arms overlap under the chin; machine washable, the maker says |
US-dollar prices are before exchange, shipping and duties. Mattress Miracle stocks none of these; our pillow collection in Brantford is for the bed you come home to.
Trtl Travel Pillow: Best Overall
The Trtl (said "turtle") swaps stuffing for a curved plastic rib in soft fleece that you set against your jaw on the side you lean, then wrap like a scarf. Trtl's Canadian store says 2 million people have bought one. Frommer's found it best of the five at stopping the nod-and-jolt cycle, though switching sides means unwrapping it.
Trtl also sells a Cool version (C$89.99), and hot sleepers who want that in bed can read our dual-sided cooling pillow review. Leaning on one side in a seat is a cousin of side sleeping, and the side sleeper pillow guide we wrote covers the loft your shoulders need at home.
Ostrichpillow Go and Cabeau Evolution S3: Foam Neck Pillows
The Ostrichpillow Go, tied for second at 42, is a foam neck pillow with an adjustable fit and a washable cover; the testers found it pricey next to the Trtl. The Cabeau Evolution S3 is a memory foam U-shape with raised sides and straps that loop around the headrest. Frommer's scored it last at 35: the straps were fiddly and, on shorter flyers, held the pillow nearer the ears than the neck.
BCOZZY: Best Chin Support
If your head drops straight forward when you doze, look at the BCOZZY: its two ends overlap under your chin and hold your head from the front. It comes in two adult sizes by neck measurement, and Frommer's did not test it. People who sleep propped upright at home may do better with an adjustable bed frame that raises the head of the bed.
Other Travel Pillows Worth a Look
The Infinity Pillow is a soft loop you wear around the neck, over the eyes or behind your back. Frommer's gave it top marks for adjustability but found it bulky, and our guide to the Infinity Pillow and other wrap pillows goes further. For the smallest packing size, Sea to Summit's 70-gram Aeros Premium Travel Pillow (US$49.95) is an inflatable wedge, and our inflatable neck pillow guide compares the air-filled options.
Travel Pillow Types Compared: Memory Foam, Inflatable, Wrap and U-Shape
Travel pillow types differ in where they catch your head when your neck muscles relax into sleep. Soft fill compresses and lets the head slide, which is how a bargain U-shape leaves you stiff.
| Type | Where it supports | Packing | Example in this guide | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memory foam U-shape | Back and sides of the neck | Squashes into a pouch | Cabeau Evolution S3 | Window seats, long flights |
| Wrap or scarf | Jaw and side of the neck, on a firm brace | Folds flat | Trtl Travel Pillow | People who lean to one side |
| Chin support | Under the chin, arms overlapping | Clips to a bag | BCOZZY | Forward nodders |
| Inflatable | Adjustable air chamber | Pocket size (10 x 6 x 6 cm packed for the Aeros) | Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Travel, 70 g | Carry-on-only trips, backpacking |
Memory Foam Travel Pillows
A memory foam travel pillow contours to your neck and holds its shape through a long flight. It has the same slow, moulding feel as the memory foam pillows Mattress Miracle sells for the bedroom. It squashes into a pouch but never packs flat.
Inflatable Travel Pillows
An inflatable travel pillow deflates flat and weighs almost nothing, but support shifts more than foam because the air moves. Picking a bed pillow is a different job, and our guide to choosing a pillow in Canada walks through fill and loft.
Wrap-Around and Scarf-Style Pillows
A wrap-style travel pillow hides a brace, usually plastic, inside soft fleece and sits on the front or side of your neck like a scarf. The idea borrows from a cervical pillow, which is shaped to hold the curve of the neck in bed.
Traditional U-Shape Pillows
The classic U-shape is the airport-shop default. Turned around, opening at the back, it puts padding under your chin where a forward nod needs it. People who sleep propped up in bed have the same head-forward problem, and our back support pillows, including the Symbia wedge, are built for that.
Do Neck Pillows Help on a Plane? What the Research Says
Neck pillows on a plane rest on sound mechanics and very little direct testing. We found no published trial of travel pillows in a seat and nothing showing they prevent injury. The Guardian's 2025 test of 13 travel pillows says that question is not well studied. The research below is on bed pillows and aircraft seats.
| Study | Who and how | Finding | What it tells a traveller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Persson and Moritz, Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 1998 | 55 people (37 hospital staff, 18 with neck problems) each rated six neck pillows over three weeks | 36 of 55 said the pillows helped their sleep and 27 of 42 said they helped neck pain; the top-rated pillow had two firmer cores under the neck curve, and the ideal was described as soft and not too high | Firm support under the neck helps many people, in bed |
| Erfanian, Tenzif and Guerriero, Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, 2004 | 36 adults with chronic neck pain at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College clinic, randomized, 4 weeks | A semi-customized cervical pillow lowered neck disability scores and morning pain; evening pain was lower but not significantly | Your home pillow matters for next-morning pain |
| Smulders and colleagues, Applied Ergonomics, 2019 | Reclined business class seat, watching in-flight films with and without a headrest | No difference in neck muscle activity; heads sat more upright without the headrest; people expected more comfort with it | Head support is mainly a comfort aid |
| Pei and colleagues, Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance, 2020 | Two hours in an aircraft seat at different recline angles and seat pitches | Neck, shoulder and lower back discomfort became pronounced at about 30 minutes and rose over the 2 hours; a 120 degree seatback and 34 inch pitch eased lower back and hip discomfort. The authors note their muscle-signal readings were not a reliable gauge of discomfort | Recline and leg room matter as much as the pillow |
| Sharafkhani and colleagues, Work, 2021 | 29 people sat 180 minutes in a simulated aircraft cabin | The back of the neck was among the most uncomfortable areas; people changed posture 1 to 9 times; cramped space made in-seat exercises hard | Expect neck strain on any long flight |
What the Research Means for Your Neck
Research suggests people expect head support to make seated rest more comfortable, while the evidence that neck support eases pain comes from bed pillows. In a 2019 Applied Ergonomics study, Smulders and colleagues found a headrest did not lower neck muscle activity in a reclined business class seat. People still expected more comfort with it over two films. HealthLink BC, run by the BC government, names holding your head in a forward posture or an odd position as a common cause of neck pain. For sleep at home, the same page suggests a small support pillow under your neck instead of your head.
Medical note: this guide is general information from a mattress and pillow store. A travel pillow does not treat an injury, a disc problem or nerve symptoms. If you have a neck or spine condition, ask your doctor, physiotherapist or chiropractor which support suits you before a long trip.
How to Wear a Neck Pillow and Sleep on a Long-Haul Flight
Wearing a neck pillow properly starts with how your head falls when you sleep sitting up. A forward nodder needs padding under the chin and a side-leaner a firm brace, and our comparison of which travel neck pillow styles work goes deeper.
- Turn a U-shape around so the thick part sits under your chin, or set a wrap's brace on the side you lean toward.
- Fix it in place. Seat straps, like the Cabeau's, keep a pillow put once you fall asleep.
- Book a window seat for a wall to lean on.
- Recline when you can. In the Pei team's seat study, a 120 degree seatback and 34 inch seat pitch eased lower back and hip discomfort.
- Get up every hour. HealthLink BC's blood clot advice is to walk the aisle hourly on long flights and to flex and point your feet every 20 minutes while seated.
- Ask about compression stockings. HealthLink BC notes many doctors recommend them for journeys over 8 hours. A 2021 Cochrane review of flights over five hours found symptomless clots in 3 stocking wearers and 47 non-wearers, among 2,637 passengers followed up. None of the trials recorded a clot that caused symptoms. Ask your doctor if you are at higher risk of clots.
- Pack an eye mask, earplugs and a spare layer; drink water and go easy on alcohol and caffeine.
- If you are thinking about melatonin for jet lag, ask a pharmacist or your doctor first, especially if you take other medication.
The home versions of these habits are on the Mattress Miracle sleep health page.
Which Travel Pillow Is Best for a Car or Road Trip?
The best travel pillow for a car or road trip is usually a side-lean pillow, because a passenger has a door to lean on. BCOZZY says its pillow folds in half to rest on the shoulder, and the Trtl's brace works on either side. Neck pillows are for whoever is not driving.
On a long drive the lower back needs help too. The Pei team's two-hour aircraft-seat comfort study found more recline and leg room eased lower back and hip discomfort; car seats were not tested. Here Mattress Miracle sells something useful. The Orthex Somnia half-moon cervical roll ($54.99) is a firm 15 x 6 x 3 inch gel memory foam bolster. Its product page suggests sitting with it behind the lumbar curve in a car seat. The Orthex Symbia 2.5 inch posture cushion ($89.99, 18 x 15 x 2.5 inches) sets the hips slightly above the knees and works on a car seat.
Stop and walk, too: HealthLink BC lists a long car trip among the causes of slowed blood flow that can lead to a leg-vein clot. If your back is sore before you pack the car, our guide to the best mattress for back pain in Canada looks at the bed side of it.
Best Camping and Backpacking Pillows
Camping pillows have to pack small and work lying down on a sleeping pad. Our longer camping pillow guide covers more of them; these three have specs we checked on the makers' sites today.
| Pillow | Build | Weight (maker) | Maker's price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow (Regular) | Memory foam layer over an adjustable air chamber, up to 12 cm thick | 99 g | US$54.95 | Backpacking; fits inside a sleeping bag hood |
| Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Travel Pillow | Inflatable wedge for sitting upright | 70 g | US$49.95 | Bus, train or plane legs of a camping trip |
| NEMO Fillo | Thick foam layer over a baffled air cell | Not listed on the product page | C$59.99 on NEMO's Canadian store | Car camping; NEMO also pitches it for flights and road trips |
NEMO says the Fillo packs to not much bigger than a russet potato. Campers who want a proper bed under them can read our camping mattress guide for Canada. If the cottage or trailer bed is the real reason you sleep badly away from home, one of the mattress toppers we sell usually costs less than a new mattress.
When Neck Pain After a Flight or Drive Needs a Doctor
Neck pain after a flight or a long drive often comes from strain, and HealthLink BC lists sleeping with your neck twisted among the common causes. Most neck pain does not need a doctor's visit, but some symptoms do. The HealthLink BC neck pain guide says to call 9-1-1 or other emergency services immediately if:
- neck pain comes with chest pain or other heart attack symptoms, such as shortness of breath and nausea
- there are signs of spine damage after an injury such as a car crash, a fall or a direct blow to the spine. Signs include being unable to move part of the body, severe back or neck pain, or weakness, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs
HealthLink BC says to call your doctor now or get immediate care if:
- you have new or worse numbness in your arms, buttocks or legs
- you have new or worse weakness in your arms or legs
- you lose control of your bladder or bowels
- long-term neck pain suddenly gets much worse and you did not cause it by being more active
- you have a history of cancer or HIV infection and new or increased neck pain
- pain wakes you from sleep
HealthLink BC's neck problems page describes meningitis as a serious illness that comes on quickly. Its signs are a severe headache, a stiff neck, a fever and sometimes vomiting; get medical care right away for that combination. If neck pain does not ease after 1 or 2 days and you cannot do your normal activities, HealthLink BC advises calling your doctor. Talk with your doctor if mild to moderate pain lasts 2 weeks despite home care.
Check your legs after a long trip as well. HealthLink BC's deep vein thrombosis page advises calling your doctor now for swelling, warmth or tenderness in a leg, or leg pain that gets worse when you stand or walk. Call 9-1-1 for signs of a clot in the lungs: sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pain that may worsen with a deep breath or cough, or coughing up blood. Fainting, a rapid or irregular pulse, and anxiety or sweating are on the same list.
A doctor, physiotherapist or chiropractor can tell you whether a pillow is part of the problem, and the Canadian Chiropractic Association's find a chiropractor directory lists clinics. If they suggest a pillow height, bring that advice to Mattress Miracle and we will fit a home pillow to it.
Travel Pillow Prices in Canada
Travel pillow prices at the makers' own stores run from US$39.99 for the Cabeau Evolution S3 to C$99.99 for the height-adjustable Trtl Pillow Plus. Each was checked on October 9, 2026, in that store's own currency.
| Price band (store currency) | Examples | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Under $50 | Cabeau Evolution S3 (US$39.99), BCOZZY adult Large (from US$49.95), Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Travel (US$49.95) | Memory foam U-shapes, chin-support wraps, inflatables |
| $50 to $80 | Ostrichpillow Go (US$69), Trtl Travel Pillow (C$74.99) | Foam neck pillows and braced wraps |
| $80 to $100 | Trtl Pillow Cool (C$89.99), Trtl Pillow Plus (C$99.99) | Cooling or height-adjustable wraps |
For comparison, Mattress Miracle's latex pillows start at $69.99 for the REM latex pillow in the 3-inch low profile, on sale from $180. A latex pillow for home use costs about what a good wrap does. Our published return policy does not take back sale items.

What Mattress Miracle Sells for Travellers
Mattress Miracle does not carry airplane neck pillows. We do carry the Somnia 3.5 Travel Pillow from Orthex ($79.99), a compact 15 x 11 x 3.5 inch gel memory foam bed pillow. It has a coconut-fibre cover and is sized for a suitcase and a hotel or cottage bed. You lie on it, so it will not hold your head up in a seat.
"The Somnia 3.5″ is my recommendation for folks who travel a lot or need that in-between height."
Dorothy Balicki, Mattress Miracle, 40+ years in mattress retail
The 3.5 sits with the other Somnia heights (3.0, 4.5 and 5.5) among our ergonomic neck pillows. Our return policy takes a pillow back within 60 days only if it is unused, with tags and in the original packaging. Settle on the height before you open it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best travel pillow for long flights?
The Trtl Travel Pillow scored highest in Frommer's long-haul test, 46 of 50 after 23 hours in the air each way, and Trtl's Canadian store lists it at C$74.99. The Ostrichpillow Go and Travelrest Nest tied for second at 42.
Are airplane pillows worth it?
For frequent flyers and any flight long enough to sleep on, usually yes: a good one stops the head bob that wakes you. For a short hop, a rolled jacket against the window does much the same. If you sleep badly at home too, our mattress quiz helps pin down why.
Can you bring a neck pillow on a plane in your carry-on?
Generally yes. The US Transportation Security Administration lists pillows as allowed in carry-on and checked bags, with the final call left to the screening officer. We found no pillow entry in the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority's item list, so ask your airline whether it counts toward your carry-on allowance. Our guide to bringing a pillow on a plane has more detail.
Memory foam or inflatable travel pillow: which is better?
Memory foam gives steadier support for long flights. An inflatable trades some support for packing (Sea to Summit's Aeros Premium Travel Pillow weighs 70 grams), so carry-on-only flyers often pick it.
How do I use a travel pillow properly?
Turn a U-shaped pillow around so the opening faces the back of your neck and the padded sides sit under your chin, which stops the forward nod. A wrap like the Trtl goes on the side you lean toward, snug but not tight. Side sleepers who like that held-in feeling at home can try a body pillow.
Which type of neck pillow is best for a car?
For a car passenger, a side-lean pillow such as a Trtl, or a BCOZZY folded on the shoulder, usually works best. For the lower back on long drives, try a lumbar roll behind the small of your back. Drivers skip the neck pillow.
Can I wash my travel pillow?
Most memory foam travel pillows have a machine-washable cover and spot-clean foam. Hand-wash inflatables with soapy water, valve closed. The Trtl's plastic brace comes out so the fleece can be washed, and BCOZZY says its whole pillow is machine washable.
What travel pillow do frequent flyers recommend?
The Trtl appears on the lists from Frommer's, the Guardian and Condé Nast Traveller, and forward nodders look at the BCOZZY. Hotel beds make some travellers think about their own, and a protector for the mattress at home is an easy hygiene upgrade.
Can a bad pillow cause headaches?
It can contribute. In a 2010 Journal of Pain Research field trial, Gordon, Grimmer-Somers and Trott studied side sleepers not being treated for neck problems. The feather pillow produced the most waking symptoms, such as neck stiffness, headache and arm pain, and the latex pillow the fewest. A sudden severe headache with a stiff neck and fever needs a doctor right away.
What pillow do chiropractors recommend for neck pain?
A cervical pillow shaped to the neck curve has Canadian trial evidence behind it. A 2004 Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association trial randomized 36 adults with chronic neck pain. After four weeks, the 17 given a semi-customized cervical pillow had lower disability scores and less morning pain than the 19 on conventional pillows. Evening pain was lower too, though not by a significant margin. Ask your own chiropractor what height suits you, and our best pillow for neck pain fitting guide covers the rest.
Can a travel pillow make neck pain worse?
It can if it holds your head at an odd angle. The Guardian's 2025 tester noted a neck pillow could aggravate aches if it makes you sit unnaturally. HealthLink BC also lists holding your head in an odd position as a common cause of neck pain. If pain after travel does not ease in 1 or 2 days and stops your normal activities, call your doctor.

If the pillow you miss on the road is the one at home, that is the pillow Mattress Miracle can help with, at 441 1/2 West Street in Brantford. In a 2009 Manual Therapy trial, Gordon and colleagues had 106 side sleepers spend a week on their own pillow and a week on each of five trial pillows. The latex (rubber) pillow beat their own pillow in most measures, and a foam contour shape showed no advantage over regular shapes. Call (519) 770-0001 to talk it through.
Outside Brantford, our shop from anywhere page explains how we help by phone. Eligible mattresses carry our 60-Night Comfort Guarantee: one exchange per purchase, with no exchange fee.
"Identify your sleeping position first, then pick the travel pillow that supports it. Side sleepers want the tall flat-front wraps, and back sleepers do fine with a classic U. The travellers who hate every travel pillow are usually stomach sleepers, and for them I suggest a compressible camp pillow and a window seat."
